I would not split our forces, until after Berlin and any other walled city is captured. In my opinion, we need 10 Catapults to take down Berlin's walls from 50% to about 12% defense in a single turn. A longer siege will allow Frederick to sent more. military units to Berlin.

At the very least, all Catapults must go to Berlin. Six HAs could go to Berlin and four promoted HAs can go to a 20% defense city. I don't like even this split.

Caveat: Well, maybe splitting our stack at Monarch level is reasonable. I play almost exclusively Deity level, so my suggestions might be too conservative for Monarch level AIs.

In my opinion, we should have built Barracks in Orleans and Double Fish long ago. I did not build them, because I needed to get our military stack out ASAP. A Stable in Paris and even Copper City would have been better too. Troops at 1 or 2 promotions are just overwhelmingly better than unprompted troops.

Sending the spy to Hatty sounds good.

If it makes you feel better STW, I can use all the units for Berlin. I just thought sniping Frankfurt would be a good idea, as it gets rid of Fred's Fe, so once we take Berlin he would have no metal. And it would be the first turn of the war. The remaining HAs could make it to Berlin in time for the attack to help clean up if they are needed. I was going to use all 10 pults for Berlin in my original plan, just not 4 HAs. The remaining stack should have 6 HAs which should be enough to take the city after some pults attack first.

Think we just take Berlin and Hamburg, and leave Frankfurt and take peace for whatever Frederick has, as the hill will lead to losses and the city is terrible. Since we have border control over the river, we can block Iron by pillaging the roads where the ottoman chariot is and the tile north of it.

Berlin is the priority, and we don't need to risk splitting our forces as we don't have overwhelming numbers. After it falls, we'll have access to roads so the follow up attack should be quick.

Other than that, I don't have any problems with your plans.

All units for Berlin then. I'll play tomorrow if there are no more objections in between. I will pillage the Fe with a HA though.

Pillaging Frederick's Iron or capturing his Iron City by splitting our forces is a reasonable plan, Packers. I just think it makes sense to use all our attacking units in a single SoD to capture it, since it will take just 2t to capture Berlin after the DoW.

I'd prefer to wipe Frederick ASAP; we could raze any city that is marginal or poor. I guess it depends on what we can get in a peace deal.

Turn 95 KK offers 20 gold for Fe working. I accept as it means he's almost done researching it.

Turn 96: War declared. Stole a worker with a HA and chariot sent to smash Fe. Spearman teleported S.

Turn 97: Arrive by Berlin 3 axes, 2 archers in it. Fe smashed by chariot. HA that stole worker joins up with stack. Theology finished. Started Paper.

Turn 98: Bombarded. Berlin at 10%, No change in units.

Turn 99: Lost stolen worker. Thought that he wouldn't pull an archer out of Frankfurt, but he did. Stalin declares on Freddy. Mao demands we cancel our deals with Hatty. I declined. Spear appears in Berlin. We take Berlin. Lost 3 pults, and 1 didn't take a scratch. Only 2 HA's badly wounded.

    Spoiler :

I stopped because there is some discussion with Stalin declaring war. Which cities do we prioritize? Do we want Munich at all? May be try and steal it? Munich is lightly defended, but it does have a spear, sword, and archer, so rushing it with HAs is risky. We can maybe see Stalin's stack next turn with the HA.

    The conquering begins! :D

How much of Germany do we want, and how much are we willing to risk to get it? If Stalin will keep Frederick's remaining forces busy, we could use our military to hit another target if we wanted. Not sure that is worth doing, but it is something to consider. Maybe finishing Germany completely would be better?

    Good job, soldiers!

Munich should be our next target as it is located directly on the path to the Orient, so we need to get it before Stalin does. Alternatively, we need to explore the Persian lands and the lands S of Mongolia (i.e. India) to see if there is a feasible way to get to the Orient south of the Himalayas, then we could go Cologne-Istanbul-Eastwards...

Finishing Frederick off completely is probably the best way in my opinion.

Thing is, Munich is more than likely Stalin's target, and its lightly defended. I should be able to spot his stack next turn to gauge if it would be feasible to take Munich. I just don't think we have the 4 or 5 turns to move the pults over to Munich before Stalin attacks. He may just attack, as doesn't have construction. He a lot of cities, so he should have a fair amount of units to take the city, even with walls. The stack is probably on the fur by Munich 1W of the fur. I could have some HA's in position to try and steal it should Stalin would fail to take it. We probably won't be able to take it without the pults cause of the spear.

Don't forget marbe, our best VC is conquest so we would need to conquer stalin anyways whether or not we get Munich. Most of our conquering will be done before RR, all but one city in fact to end the turn when the railroad is finished. Ideally, we'd have a lot of workers in place to finish the railroad asap.

I do agree that finishing off Freddy is best. If we don't, stalin probably will.

I don't think we need to worry about completely finishing Freddy now. He isn't going anywhere any time soon. While we have a relative tech advantage militarily I think we want to use our HA army to cripple more AI's (Ideally we can get to Hatty before longbows which she is likely going to get soon).

Since we have Theology, I think we should consider using our GS for GA, switching Org Religion + Theocracy + Religion (was it christianity we had?). We're not getting any help from AI with the religion spread so we should whip our fish city for missionaries to give quick barracks to everyone else.

I am reluctant to use our GS for a golden age, since we would like to have him for a later bulb to help us get to railroad. We may generate a non-GS great person at some point who would be a better candidate for triggering a golden age. To spread religion we can just build a monastery in one city to be our missionary pump; if we put it somewhere we could use some culture anyway we would also get some value from it that way. This may be better than spending a golden age or anarchy time to get into OrgRel just to produce missionaries.

Stalin finishing off Germany would be helpful to us (no more "yearn to join the motherland" unhappiness in our new cities), although of course we will need to deal with a bigger Russia later. I think it really just depends on how much of Germany can we take now with what military we have available, without suffering too many losses.

I played the rest of my turnset. I took Hamburg, the double sheep city, after checking out Stalin's stack. It wasn't much really.
    Spoiler :

    Munich's defenders:
    Spoiler :

No way Stalin takes Munich soon, which is why I went after lighter defended Hamburg. Only lost one catapult.
    Spoiler :

I do think the stack should rest up a bit, and wait for some reinforcement pults to arrive before heading to Munich. Its probably going to be tough to take.

7 turns left on HG, with 2 more forests to chop. One next turn, one after that. Should have the HG in 2-3 turns.

We can also see Hatty's research now. She's going Machinery with 7 turns left.

    Nice work, Packers5280!

Machinery...Hatty is definitely going to be a problem. :( Maybe musketeers will be our best bet to deal with her?

I agree, we want Musketeers ASAP. This means no GA using our GS. We want a 2nd GS so we can 2 bulb Education. From there Gunpowder will not take long to complete.

We may want to keep Espionage on Hatshepsut, perform Support City Revolt missions in three of her major cities, using multiple Spies in each city, attack with only (prdferably drafted) Musketeers.

I don't believe we can attack Hatshepsut before she has Longbowmen. We probably should focus on other AIs to our east in the near term, continuing to depend heavily on Catapult bombardment and barraging.

With Machinery Hatty will have strength 6 defenders even without longbows (assuming she has iron). So we will need a sizable number of musketeers. Drafting them would be nice, but will require Nationalism; most likely we will need to build a fair number the regular way. Maybe we can draft some later, after conquering some of our closer neighbors along the way?

Putting EP on Egypt sounds good; we might even be able to slip in a tech steal or two along with some city revolts if we run the slider some. Will have to see what our situation is once we get closer to that point.

Sorry, my civ data somehow got corrupted and I need to look for my old discs. Are Hatty's cities on hills?

Crossbows don't get hill and city bonuses like longbows, so their relative power against HA's are all in fortification bonuses because HA's are immune to first strike. If she doesn't have hilled cities, then it's pretty reasonable to attack before gunpowder because our production should overpower hers.

Excellent points, ikotomi! We just need to rebuild Catapults until we get about 10 of them. Before that we should build Barracks in Orleans and Double Fish plus Stable in Paris.
