SGOTM 9 - Bede

Tee-hee, :mischief:, does that mean you are volunteering or that you are qualified?

NO, I think he only wanted to provoke you to go for another civ3 SGOTM ride. Come on Bede, it was a great team and we have had lots of fun. IMHO not the most up-to-date software counts, but the fun you have with the guys around. We have just started with our efforts and after SGOTM 9 we have a lot of things to improve. You were a great captain who really kept the team mood and motivation with lots of good ideas and turnset logs. We would lose the spirit of the team, if you leave. You cannot honestly believe, that any SGOTM Civ4 team can beat the next try of this great team.

So let's push Bede a little bit to make him come back to CIV3 SGOTM (BTW, can we really already tell that he was that good as a leader?)

Well, I certainly wouldn't mind if Bede decided to stay around for a game or two :) The team has warmed up now :P

Even teams like Wacken and Klarius had to start somewhere, and I think that this team has enormous untapped potential. So, hang around for another round, Bede.

Of course, I have CivIV, so you're not getting rid of me either way ;)

One thing I have noticed while reading the other threads was our poor choice of Government. We should have gone with Republivc rather than Monarchy, and they we ccould have switched to Communism.

Definetly not! Team Klarius also went the monarchy path and did very well! So our mistake must have been somewhere else. I propose to carefully read the Team Klarius thread. There you might discover the differences to our performance. Very helpful.

@CH: Yes, we concluded that a few pages ago.

What's most impressive to me, is that some folks actually do the math on things like war weariness. In fact, all great players seem to be doing that on occasion. I remember going over Wacken's turnlog of the recent Sid COTM, he actually calculated if Feudalism would be beneficial. I know I'll never find the energy to do that... I always play on intuition.

The Spanish excursus is what sealed our fate. The window on Brennus was closing fast and diverting to Spain slammed it in our faces.

Playing the bulk of the game in Republic would have helped some as it might have given us some more productivity in the north lands, and the WW thing would not have really become an issue until the latter stages anyway. But that was far from the deal breaker.

The best way to a better conclusion would have been to shut down the Celts as soon as we could cross the water safely. A 20K victory comes from early culture in the capital or another early city, not empire wide strength. Had we rolled on the Celts and slowed them down in the Middle Ages (after Invention) we could ghave hurt the cultural build up in the capitol (I think that was the 20K city) The boldest option would have been to sail across from East Island (using the differential naval movement to cross the strait).

And I didn't see that possibility soon enough....

I fully agree, Bede!
But does the fact that you did not reply to my hope that you would continue civ3 SGOTM mean that your decision to leave is final? If so, thank you for leading this team. It was a great experience and a lot of fun.
Farewell, and have a good time with civ4.

BTW, who of you guys will be back for SGOTM10?

Were I to continue with C3C GOTM it would once again be with a group of newcomers. Since the SGOTM3 I have made it a point of taking the new kids on the block and getting them into the game. So my sincerest hope is that you all will continue with other teams, or you could form your own.

I have really had a good time with this series, but I find as I grow older I can only deal effectively with one style of game (I gave up on the Classic GOTM a long time ago, though I did continue to play the COTM), so for "right now" my decision remains to concentrate on C4. I am still struggling at Prince in solo games and it is becoming an obsession to refine my game there to Monarch or better.

Play on, gents.

I couldn't tempt you back to one more C3C SG even with a start like this?

One thing I did notice is the lack of preparation in seeing how we could achieve our goals. I think we did rush quite a bit, which I do think was partly to blame for the rule where we had to play within 24 hours did make us rush before we could adequately get some analysis done on the upcoming turns. Next time we need to be more proactive in our analysis, because that was one of the shorcomings of this team.

I tend to agree. Perhaps in the future, instead of a 24-24 rule, we should try a 24-72 rule. That is, the next person in the queue has 24 hours to post a "got it" message, and then 72 hours to actually play the turnset. This will allow for a lot more discussion on strategy.

I figured I'd just post something to make it less obvious to the other teams that we're out of it.

Team CDZ has passed team Klarius in the score graph, and I can't help but notice that some of the slower teams (notably Team Wacken and Team Smurkz) are posting the highest scores as of the last turns they completed.

Eventually, the other teams will notice that we haven't progressed beyond 1870, but...

I'll be back as well for another SGOTM. Mark and me thought it would be fun to do a little practice SG in between. Anyone interested?

I think a team made up of all of you, led by any one of you, would be pretty competitive. And practice never hurts, so bash on.
