SGOTM 9 - Wacken

Yeah Gozpel, i figured all the builds were placeholders because construction was expected next turn.

I did doubt about building a lib first before the aqua in reykjavik, but i was unsure if we would need to build extra horses there and the research that was about to come from it was small anyway, therefore i chose to start with an aquaduct there as well.

How is the Great Library plan getting on?

Some embassies would be nice.

We could get monarchy for trading purposes if we wanted. Carthage has a worker for sale as well.

Gozpel, Reykjavik has a 0.186% flip risk, a garrison of 3 is needed to be safe.

I am just about to have a look at the save. Will post my plans before playing but AFAIK Gozpel's advise covers most of what might happen during my turnset.

We need to start that now or we can lose it to the other continent, they seem wonder happy over there. Oslo can build it in 25-30 turns depending how many pop we can use there with the grumpiness. Too bad we didn't continue improve around Bergen, that town could get up to around 20 shields.

Of course Trondheim could build the GLib too, in around 20 turns, but that would be at the cost of the surrounding towns, as the capitol would have to use all the good shields.

I think it is important we make a decision on this.

OK, GL is an important decision now. I will wait for a decision on this before playing.

My initial response would be to change Oslo to GL now.

Also the Palace build in Stavanger. What is that a pre build for?

Where do we establish our new capital? Area near Karakorum or later in Carthagian lands?

I think that is for the upcoming chops, so the shields go to Karasjok.

Those floodplains in old mongol territory looks like a nice area.

I had some thoughts about this yesterday and wonder if it would be feasable to plan for our new empire in the new world? If we get to Navigation fast enough, it is doable.

But this would mean lots of things, like containing India as usual, build the GLib. Jump the palace to northern area and create something of that territory, continue research at max and saving Ottos.

Then go and take over the other continent, jump palace again :) and start over. With plenty of workers to join cities over there and some saved money it is possible.

When the time is right, we let India take over the whole first continent.

Possible - yes. Realistic - no.

I think we should just build up the N area and make it better then our existing empire, then we jump.

The problem by taking over the other continent is first the domination factor, we can't simply do it that way. Not if we want India to get all techs necessary for them to build a space-ship.

We can though: sort out which civ we want to live on the other continent. Who is fastest in researching anything that could help us? Not Celts, for sure. I think Spain is pretty good as commercials.

So what I suggest for the longer plan is to take out America and Celts, build up those cities over there and then gift it all to Spain, so they can start researching. But not until we used every tile there for scientists to help us in our own research.

Is this reasonable - yes. Possible - I have no bloody clue

It's just my vivid imagination and trying to think out of the box. Please think about this and figure out if there is any substance in this "plan".

But first and all, we have to take over our own continent and build up a second core. Second core really means something this time.

Karasjok is building granary? Barracks would be better there, but we would lose 5 shields on a switch now. I rather have barracks there though.

"Former" mongol lands, yeah right. Ta-Tu is situated there, by the floodplains, I would prefer our new capitol a couple of tiles inland.

Glib can be built in 26 turns in Oslo if we switch now, we better do that. The library is one turn from finishing and won't do much for our science anyways.

Offa wondered about embassies, when we can afford it, we should stir up things on the other continent. If for nothing else, it's fun. :)

Another thing, I know Wacken hates stacking workers. But without markets another lux or two would help us greatly, so I suggest we set workers to build roads only to the front for now and then connect any new luxes. It will also help with military movements.

For a variant like this, the map is just plain diabolical. Don't you think?

Edit: And yeah, we really need some stuff in Reykjavik or at least around, to prevent a flip. I would really hate to lose that incense.

Btw, why are you all so busy, it's not X-mas yet? I can't imagine how it will be when the holiday season comes...

Is it Civ4, you mongrels? :gripe:

Maybe I should shut up for a bit:

Blabbles since Offa's last save (my turn to play)

Dman - 6 posts
gozpel - 21 posts (not including this one)
Offa - 6 posts
Wacken - 14 posts
Xevious - 8 posts

When I have a slab of beer, I'm gonna count all posts. But not today, with just a sixpac.

Partly Gozpel. I certainly feel overextended with 4 SGs, and can't find time to actually play civ at all. This game has my top priority, although I see my spam count is low, and my posts have been brief.

Well, I'm fine with that explanation...as long as you don't spell my name with a capital G.

My name is gozpel.

Humble and meek as I am I prefer my spelling of my name. Long back ago, I was known as gOZpEl, which included illegal transferring files over the datanet. Hmm, 16 baud modems, that was the time. :)

Now, I'm simply gozpel.

And to the point. I understand some of you have a life and need to do things first. But that won't make me stop spamming.

Now, if you happen to have any ideas (or ideas of my ideas), please express yourself. :)

I'm also pretty low profile now here. Normally i am good for almost 50% of our total team posts. :)

I have also vastly overextended myself.
I declared my retirement from civ several times in the past and decided to continue with just the sgotm. That was good. Now i am playing several sg's, i am planning to play the first civ4 gotm and i have agreed with you to play the Sid cotm. (I would want to play that Sid cotm anyway)

Besides that, i have some new hobbies and things in life that stopped my from dedicating most of my free time on civ.

This sgotm has my first priority of all civ games, but still i won't be able to give it the amount of attention i am used to give the sgotm.
I will see if i have time when i get my turns again in the other sg's, but i expect to step out of at least some of them.

I have currently no time to look into this game and tonight i will be doing a poker tourney. So you guys will have to do without me or have a lot of patience :(

Imo gOZpEl, you should not at all shut up, keep it comming, make up for our inactivety :)

2 weeks from now, i will be unemployed, that should provide some extra time for civ :D (although i will also need to spend some on poker, programming and job finding......)

What! COTM is sid. I haven't checked out the main site in sooo long. I really haven't got the time but it is tempting.

Wacken: Good luck with your job: I hope this is all part of your masterplan.

gozpel: small case it is. For myself I claim both offa and Offa on this site and use both interchangably.

Gyathaar: your maps and variants are insanely great :goodjob: , even if the cheeseburgers won last time.

Wow, a sudden flurry of postings, will read them later today, but for now:

The palace prebuild is just so the forest chop further north goes to the right city (i.e. not Stavanger).

OK, if I had given it some thought I should have been able to figure that out. A bit too lazy ATM? ;) About to start playing my turns now.

Those last couple of posts proves noone really cares about my posts

I am more than a spammer...at least I think so.

I would like to point out I am of a different opinion. ;)
I find your actively trying to think outside of the box which I find very refreshing. Even if we eventually follow a different path, addressing ideas outside of the standard approach in Civ is valueable.

Playing now!!!

Not true. I didn't have time to read through everything at the moment. You're right that we need to inhabit the northern part of our continent, which is why I was building a granary in Karasjok. I think we can get enough shields there to pop out settlers, and it's one of our northernmost towns, so they will have less distance to walk. Horses from our core have 2 movement so they will get up to the front lines pretty quickly.

I also agree that the GL could be built in Oslo.

As for it not being Christmas yet, Christmas generally gets into swing right after Thanksgiving. There's shopping and holiday gatherings, and I deal craps (the casino game) on the weekends for a casino party company in addition to my regular job (mainframe computer equipment field engineer) where I'm on call a lot. Couple that with attempting to play COTM19 and IVotm1, while not ignoring my 9 and 10 year old girls and I find myself feeling (as Bilbo said) like butter spread over too much bread.

After Action Report:
Two Workers should chop jungle next turn so it finishes in just 1 turn(stack 2 tiles N of Alesund)

No Leaders :( But 4 or 5 HMs and a Swordman promoted to Elite.

5 HMs next to TaTu. They could attack and probably take it this turn but I leave the decision to the team. Maybe we should wait for TaTu to grow in size so it is not destroyed when captured?

Chivalry in 1 turn. What should we go after next, Theology?

GL in 16 turns.

With Knights maybe our next target should be Carthage?

Sorry i am not participating much...
i've been having intense negotiation with potential new employer and looks like i got the job on my terms! Yay!!!! :)

Feel much happier now with offer on my desk and pressure is off...

I will play this game over the weekend.

One comment... did we really need to research chivalry???? It's optional and we just lost few turns.
Please give me some ideas... i barely followed the thread but i will read it all later today. sorry about that.
