SGOTM8 - Cutlery

OK, now THAT redefines gibberish to me.

We'll retreat our 5 archers and three horses for healing. The 3 turns of movement and 4 turns of healing will give us time to put several more cats in the stack (currently 4) and 3 to 4 more horses. Then there's 2 turns to be back at Beijing's door for attack the next turn. Ten turns total.

We're probably 20 turns from attacking Alex and he just got Feud and a small amount of gold (33). At the curent rate we'll be close to finishing Mono and should be able to trade someone for Feud and/or Engineering. Alex will be sporting pikes so many stone throwers, horses and spears/pikes will be the order of the day. It would be nice if we could clear off our continent w/o spending any research on Chivalry.

War weariness in the next 10 turns could put a crimp in our research.

Good that we have more contacts.

Too bad the attack on Beijing didn't work. I thought there might be more forces there than I had seen. Is it worth calling it off and trying again in 20 turns?

Funny, he makes perfect sense to me. For once.

 This is Greece. Alex has had pikes since the beginning of the game. I'm more worried about counterattacking MDI's, and us with only spears to stop them.

Well, since we have no iron, and won't until we get deep into Greece, what's the point of going for Chivalry?

Aye. The usual trot along the bottom path, 'til Gunpowder at least, is what I'd go for. If we have saltpeter, then go for MT and forget about Chivalry altogether. If we don't... Longbow time :hammer:

Actually, the more I think about it, the more I think it's time to make peace. Beijing is obviously going to be a tough nut to crack (and how many more spears will it build during the ten turns it'll take to prepare for another assault?), and Alex's cities won't be much easier. We need better troops.

We also have a lot of infrastructure to build - libraries, markets, and aqueducts in most cities. I'm not sure that pouring all of our production into military, then throwing away lots of units on attacks with bad odds, is the most useful course of action right now.

So I say we make peace with China, take what we can get, and build infra for a couple of turnsets. Engineering is out there already, so hopefully longbows aren't too far away. Then we can try going to war again.

I'm with MM. Make peace before Mao figures out that we're not that big of a threat to him.

Research for MT (hopefully there is some salt in our desert) and use longbows along the way to Athens in about 20-30 turns

i was refering to the good ol' days where Great Britain ruled almost half the planet, with colonies everywhere.
in those days we had colonies on almost all longtitues, and thus "the sun never set on the british empire"
and the territories were coloured PINK in the maps, thats why the world was pink.

now, on topic (so i wont be accused of needlessly bumping our spam score...

Minute man makes an excellent point for peace, so i agree. lets sign peace and get what we can. we can get them later, as were in no rush to leave this island.

Well we'd like to ge to the one where Tatung is ;)

Longbows and trebs sound OK, although if this were a solo I'd lower the head again and would rush onto it like a bull until it broke. I guess I underestimated the size 8 hill city.

However if we do go LB, we might want to go for a very thick infrastructure focus until we get there.

At the moment we have two turns invested in Mono. I went this path because nobody else had it in hopes of getting there first w/ a peace dividend. With peace at hand we can turn up research a bit more while our focus is on infrastructure. The question is, shall I continue working on Mono or drop to the bottom of the tree right now?

I don't know that I have ever played as Greece, strange given all this time, so was unaware of their pikes. And I forgot about the iron requirement for chivalry.

I'd go ahead and drop to the bottom. 2 turns isn't that bad. But I'd also not take my own advise. So I guess wait on another reply before continuing.

Will Mao still offer Tatung? how about Teintsin?

Since Engineering is out there, researching it seems like a waste; I'm sort of inclined to say stick with Mono and try to trade.

I don't know that I have ever played as Greece, strange given all this time, so was unaware of their pikes.
You've never started next to Greece and had to deal with hoplites in the early going? Lucky you, I seem to get them about every other game.

I've never played a war game when starting next to greece. Hoplites just make it not worth it. I've been lucky in not starting next to them so far, but avoiding them works well ;)

As for the techs, Mono is a definite go for trade value. 2 turns is not bad. Bottom of the tree sounds natural for a conquest game afterwards though, expecially without iron.
I'd sign peace ASAP to be able to re-declare as soon as we have a few longbows gathered at their gate.

Keep researching Mono, I hate to see beakers go to waste! (Roll on Civ4... they're finally getting some of the SMAC/X features into the Civ series!!) Peace will allow a faster burn, get Libs up in the core, and if we can sell Mono for some decent gold we might have enough for upgrades :D

Pre-build for Leo's? Or is it too late to start/think about that?

Probably not too late, but I don't think it would be all that helpful. In the short run, it would be nice to upgrade archers to longbows cheaply, but that's about the extent of the benefit; once we secure our continent, we won't need a lot of up-to-date units until we can transport units by air. We probably have better things to do with a few hundred shields.

I'd be more inclined to think about one of the wonders that will help make our empire more productive or help with research (Bach's, Cop's, Newton's, etc), but going for the military techs will make that harder to pull off.

Bach's and Cop's indeed, when the AI's will handily trade them to us. I guess that means no hurry there.

I noticed that the spoiler thread has been rumored to be opened soon. The sad part is that we won't be qualified for it as of now.

For players to read this thread your team will be required to have met all your rivals or confirmed that they are dead, to have bought all your rivals' world maps, and to have researched all the mandatory Ancient Age techs.
If someone could start on this in their spare time so that we could post it there once it opens that would be great. I wrote the one for SGOTM6 and did so-so. There are better wordsmiths than I on this team so I'll defer to someone else. I'd like to include something about the monkeys and typewriters.

I'll make this a personnality contest and audition ;) j/k

I think we need to emphasize the infinite monkey typewriter thing and put less emphasis on the game as is. If anyone is interested in that part, they'll read Wacken or X or something, not Cutlery. I'd also include a chapter on Killmaim's post-traumatic syndrome from 1000 BC when he was slaying a barbarian village, and his re-insertion in society as MP before the chinese war.

Yes SW, it's basically a re-cap of everything that happens

As always, a nominated team scribe will be required to post a summary of your team's progress before other team members can post in it. Posts and images should not disclose information about strategic resource locations other than horses and iron
I agree with BEF that ours won't be the one that people will read to glean info from. A competition would be great. Maybe jb can ramble a little and we could post them all, since most people don't post in the SGOTM spoiler threads..........slackers.
