For Narz's game my computer gives Rfd8 at -1.34 (3/12 depth).

I've played the Ruy Lopez (as white) for many years now but I must admit Col's game still confused me. Very unusual positions as far as I know. The computer didn't like white's opening play but I couldn't see why exactly. And the endgame was played really well. Congratulations on 2k.

Its a line that computers never rate - but its much better than its reputation.Nigel Short revitalised that line preparing for his world champ matches.

Won a pawn after a strightforward series of exchanges but I think c4 was the key move he missed. Forcing an outside passed pawn.

And now reached 2k on the tactical and strategic trainers!

Congratulations!

Well, 2000 seems a bit distant, but 1900 is quite a a bit better than I managed on Queen Alice.

Thought I'd better register it quickly before my 'Two for the Show!' Queen sashay comes to an inglorious end.

Well when it comes to the Tactics Trainer, I'm at a lowsy 912, due to getting 2/3 incorrect the first time I tried them, and I took too long on the 3rd one to get it right the first time. Proves I'm no good for blitz-style chess.

I tend to hit runs - I got 8 in a row wrong after a few drinks - then hit a winning run.
I play too fast on the trainer with the clock ticking away!

I would do the trainer more often, except I tend to get lost in good books, a good game on my computer or PS3, or a good movie. I also tend to get too busy working on my latest novel. I will try harder to use the trainer.

Always nice to have two queens - nice finish

What's your novel about? Am I in it? :D
It's about a guy who chosen by the higher powers that govern the multiple universes to become the champion of Justice. I'm tentively calling it "Avatar of Justice". And no, you are not in it. No one from here is, because the key player does not play chess. (I couldn't write anything about chess even if I wanted to. I'm not exactly the best player around.;))

Fun lil' blitz game (I haven't played any blitz in awhile)

The fun begins after 20. ... Nd7 :D

Personally, I don't play blitz because I like to consider each of my moves for at least 30 minutes.

Well I didn't really play either until age nineteen. ;)

How far are you into the book?

Avoiding blitz in the beginning is probably a good policy. :)

To be totally honest, still on page 1. I've got too many good movies to watch and good games to enjoy to be able to concentrate more. That's my main writer's weakness.:o:lol:

No kidding, since I lost my first blitz match to an AI player on time!

BTW, :newyear: all!

An interesting game against a guy I met at an NYC chess meetup. Was very even for about half the game, then he won a pawn, then I won it back with what I considered a positional advantage but then, somehow, I lost it & was worried I'd lost the game (I thought his move 50 ... Bc4 was very good) but we settled for a draw after we both queened & there wasn't any (seeming) way for either of us to mate or win the other guy's queen.

Comments welcome.

Looked like a complicated game. There were plenty of inferior moves from both sides according to the computer but I am unfortunately sick and have no stamina to go through too many moves.

Apparently you did miss a clear win with 42. Ne5+ if black tries to go after the pawns he loses to 42...Kb3 43. Nxd3 Bxd3 44. Kxd3 Kxb2 45. g4 and if instead 42...Kd4 the computer claims that both 43. h5 and 43. Nf7 are clear wins (+2.00 or better). Looks to me like many other moves might win too but I'm not entirely sure.

Also, you definatley missed an immediate win with 46. Ng4 which gives you a shiny new Queen. 46...fxg4 47. f5 Bd5 48. h6 Bg8 49. f6 and one pawn will queen.

50. Nd4 seems to be the move where you are no longer winning. Instead, Nc5 is the much better move. After 50...a4 51. Nb5 Kb3 52. g4 Kc4 for example, looks like black's King will be able to get back to stop your pawns and get a draw.
