Sarissaphoroi: Unlike the other cities of Greece, the Larissans have a strong tradition of horsemanship. This tradition is exemplified by the Sarissaphoroi, the heavy lancers of the Larissan army. Armed with long "sarissa" pikes which outreach the spear of a typical hoplite, and well-armored with bronze scale and a leather cuirass, these heavy cavalry can shatter enemy lines with their powerful charge. The Sarissaphoroi are well-trained and highly skilled horsemen, and use their tactical mobility to great advantage, outrunning anf outmaneuvering slower infantry formations to strike at the rear or flanks. Once an enemy line has crumbled, the cavalry can effectively chase down the fleeing soldiers. The only weakness of the Sarissaphoroi is their vulnerability if bogged down in hand-to-hand combat; the long pike is useless at sword range, and the Sarissaphoroi carry only a small short sword for close-in protection.
