Shield Resource

What is the use of "shield" resource scattered on grassland tiles?

Is it for display purposes only? Does it has future use? No idea.

Grassland without it produces 2 foods, grassland with it produces 2 food plus a shield.

Do they also give a defense bonus, or is that just MGE?

I modded it and forgot the original tile yield. Just got a little confused. Thanks.

No defense bonus; no anything else; just a shield which in early game is extremely important.

I see late in the game that cities built on grassland with no shield do get a shield anyway. Is this something that happens when you discover Industrialization?

AFAIK, it's always. Nothing concerned about industrialization.

Cities get a minimum of one shield on the center square, regardless of terrain type.

It means it's better to build the city on a non-shield grassland.
Various rules in various Civ versions have the potential to confuse me sometimes.
