Why does a ship have to be in a city to heal. Can they not implement healing if you are on a coastal square. Ships didnt need to sail back to port just for repair - repair would be faster in a city but they should still allow repairing if you fortify on a coastal square for a number of turns.

It certainly makes more sense for naval unit to heal in neutral territory then for a ground unit to heal in enemy territory as occurs after the creation of Heroic Epic (or whatever it is.) I'm not sure if I like the idea of units being able to heal on their own outside a city on their own. There was some interesting talk about ambulance units and repair ships which could be used here.

I agree, the naval voyages are long enough as they are, it would be more appropriate if they could heal in neutral coastal territory, atleast the early ships. Having ambulance units on the other hand I think would be more annoying than fun.

Mebbes you could have it that wooden boats/ships could heal in neutral coastal waters but metal ships have to put into port. Possibly even say big ships like battleships should only heal in cities with a harbour.

I'd like to see a lot of things change the way naval movement is handled. Exploration should be made abstract with orders given, and with successive missions some part of the map explored civs discovered and so on. If you're within a certain radius, determined by the shiptype, from one of your civs cities, and no enemy ships are in the way, you should be able to go to the city in one turn. The same with rebasing ships. Movement of ships could probably be increased, but maybe with some random damage taken when out of port for too long.

Yeah! The old wooden warships always brought with them carpenters. Only really serious damage had to be repaired in port!

ships in the red should have to return to port to be repaired as they indicate serious problems that cannot be fixed at sea. ie the bismarck was hit by a fatal torpedo and had to return to port where it was out of action for months and was never the same.wooden ships never had the same problem as wood floats, steel doesnt so have a think about that.in real life nuclear subs are forced to return to port for a checkup every 12 months i believe as they have a chance of a nuclear explosion - would be nice to add this.

Good idea... If they have 4 hitpoints left they can heal in neutral territory. If they have 3 hitpoints left they can heal in your coastal territory or an allies' costal territory. If it is redlined it has to go to port.

Thus only elites could heal in neutral territory.

You should be allowed to heal up to a certain amount (say, half health, rounded down for odd #s of HP), unless you only have 1 HP left, in which case the ship is too damaged to repair itself.

Boats can contain some damage but cannot heal completely while out at sea.

You also have to remember, though, that units mostly represent more than one vessel AND also is an abstraction of both morale and damage resistance factors! This is why I would like to see hp rate from 1-20 or 1-50 rather than just 1-4 or 1-6! This way, you could lose up to 4 or 10 points of damage, respectively, and still heal even out in the ocean (as this represents morale and minor crew losses), between 10 and 25 points of damage, and you cannot heal just anywhere, but must AT LEAST be in the sea (as this would represent MAJOR crew losses and/or losses of vessels), once you get to between 12 and 30 points of damage, then only port and/or coastal repair is possible, as this is major damage and loss of vessels across the board! If your unit has anything less than 5 or 10 hp, respectively, then ONLY a port repair would be possible!
