Should be a patch request?

I'm not sure if this should be a patch request, but whenever I'm in a war and have a city(s) which is within or beyond enemy territory, my workers fearlessly trek THROUGH war zones. Usually they never make it unless I provide a manual escort for an automatic move.
Shouldn't they be avoiding enemies and enemy areas?

That IS your solution.
Determining the shortest route for moves is actually a pretty difficult task for the game to perform. Asking it to determine the "safest" or "least risky" route would be even tougher. It would be pretty subjective and, even if it worked, would probably slow the game down pretty noticeably. Some things ya just gotta do for yourself.

In principle I totally agree with you, but I see the difficulties to set up an appropriate algorithm for that.
People have claimed that this would slow down the overall speed of the game dramatically. As the algorithms seems to function at the very moment, I have to agree to that as well.

Neverthelss, the game doesn't have to calculate that much during the turns. For sure it has less complex calculations to perform than a race game or a sports game has to do. They don't manage to have it do so in acceptable time, either. And that in a time, when systems tend to have 1+GHz and lot's of memory...

So, I would think that this proposal will never be realized in a patch.
All we can hope is that they will rework the engine for Civ4 from the scratch. Maybe, they shouldn't use BASIC any longer. :p
