Should I get a better processor?

Short answer: No.

Long answer: I'm not sure exactly which cpu model you have (socket type, FSB etc.), but it's likely that you will have to buy a new motherboard and RAM at the same time as a new cpu to get the full benefit from the upgrade. If you are having no problems at the moment then there is no point in spending money when you don't need to. Wait for about a year when it will probably be a good time to upgrade to a 64-bit system.

You're saying what I'm thinking, but I still want other people's opinions.

The point is that I'm not sure how to judge a processor. For the last two years I've considered everything over 2 GHz good, but I'm wondering if that point of view is beginning to get outdated.

Zakharov requested some more info, and here it is:
- Socket 478
- 1 MB cache
- What is FSB?
- 2x512 MB TwinMos DDR PC3200 RAM (I don't understand why I need to buy new RAM, as I've used these two modules with another processor with no problems)

And yes, I'm aware of the fact that I might need a new motherboard.

I have a 1.8 GHz P4, and it seems to run fine with most games, even with my only 256 MB RAM. Of course I would like an upgrade, but in the meantime, I'm not needing one.

FSB=Front Side Bus. I belive that the speed at which data is tranfered along the motherboard. my guess would be that itsgot an FSB of 533. Pretty much the only reasons you would want a new CPU CPU is:
1.To slow. I used to have a 400Mhz one not to long ago.

2.Different model (eg. 64bit or dual core)

I'm going to echo Zakharov here and say wait another year. Then 64 bit and dual core will be cheaper and the need to have CPU.;)

I have a question about whether I should get a new processor two, so I thought I'd ask here instead of making a new thread.

My current is AMD 1800+ (palomino) on a DDR333 motherboard (neither the processor nor ram are running at 333; they're both at 266 or 133 or whatever it is...). What options do I have? Is it worth upgrading now? How much will it cost? I don't mind buying new ram (i.e. ddr333) if I get a better processor (cos I'll have to basically or else there's no point right?).

I don't mind not having a state of the art processor, cos I know that if I want one I'll have to scrap my motherboard. So what options do I have with my current mobo?

And what are these Sempron things? Are they any good? Is a Sempron better than a Barton (say) of the same rating?

Sempron is the "Value Segment" of the current AMD product spectrum, it is comparable to the Intel Celeron line of processors, but by no means equal to. http://www.amdzone.com/pics/cpus/athlon64/4800+/cpupositioning.JPG
Price wise you might want to go with Athlon they are only marginaly more expensive and carry more "bang-for-your-buck." Of course you could go with the Athlon FX, but you might want to buy a Plasma screen for that kind of cash ;)
But to be honest I would wait for Multi-core processors to become mainstream, considering that DDR3 and SATA-2 are around the corner, those boards would probably last 3 years.

I have a 2.4 GHz Pentium 4 processor which works just fine. No lag in games (it has to be mentioned that I don't play the newest games), and Windows runs smoothly. So I wonder: Is there really a reason to upgrade?

No...

that will keep you going for another couple of years..

Depends very much on what your current mobo is, and how fast your RAM is. Your present motherboard may not be overclock friendly/might not have latest BIOS, and while you can run faster RAM on a slower processor, you cannot run slower RAM with a faster processor.

A Sempron is a rebadged XP Thoroughbred. Smaller cache than a top class Barton.

A better bet would me an XP-2600 M (M for mobile) which can be clocked nice and fast but doesn't get as hot as quick. Problem is, not all motherboards support them. :( And the unclocked versions are apparently more common in Europe than the US.

SATA-II is here.

DDR3 isn't around the corner, at least for AMD boards. Socket M2, due out in 2006 will support DDR2.

Heh, don't suppose SATA-II is backwards compatible with SATA?

SO AMD is getting DDR2 support.

Seems like everybody agrees that 2.4 GHz is enough, so I'll stick to it. Seems like I'll use that money for an LCD screen instead.

I would recommend a Samsung 19" 913N :goodjob:
Very happy (after swapping it back from a dead pixel but noprobs so far)

Most places require like 7 dead pixels before they replace them though. :(

But on the other hand, if everyone exchanged their monitors if they had any dead pixels, the prices would be significantly higher... so ideally, everyone would put up with their dead pixels except for me. :p

I'm currently considering my next monitor purchase, wavering between a nice 19" LCD, and a top of the line 22" CRT.

I read that AMD is skipping DDR2 altogether, and to be honest I think they would be smart to do so, considering it is more 'spensive than just going to DDR2 and then DDR3 bc AMD has its Memory adressing on die.
Sorry, but I havent seen a single SataII drive in Europe, so mabe they are here If you consider "here" not here but there :)

I'll keep that one in mind. I've checked it out and it seems alright. 8ms response time is the best I've seen so far (I haven't checked much, though). Other people seemed to be satisfied as well. It doesn't support DVI, though. Thanks for telling me anyway!

Yeah, I read that too, but since then, there's been a bunch of information released about their two sockets supporting DDR 2. Check out any major hardware sites for information.
