Should I get this game?

I heard civ 5 was an upset and because of this I didn't get civ 5 and stayed with the civ 4 series.

It has a lot of issues but it isn't the worst game ever made. I would wait to see if they offer a special deal when the expansion is released or at least wait for a Steam deal. I doubt that it is worth paying full price for right now.

It's a fantastic game, people complain about the AI but people always do that. I find the gameplay very refreshing and fun, and some of the newer rules and abilities make the game much better, at least in my opinion.

29.99$ on steam, cant go wrong

I love Civ5 and have been spent a lot of hours playing it. In my humble opinion it's better than Civ4 but there are plenty of people around here who would disagree with that statement. Basically Civ5 is less complex then Civ4. If you like micromanagement then you probably won't like Civ5 as much as Civ4.

It's less complex, but more complex in my opinion.

You have 'dumbed down' options available to you, but personally I think removing some of the sliders and happiness from towns makes the game that much better. I know when I played CIV before CIV5 I would always twist the system to give myself a boost in times when I needed it, whereas now I need to think of what I do before I just go out meandering :p

Depends what you're looking for. The tactical combat was good. Hexes and no stacks make a huge difference. Everything else was pretty dumbed down though.

It also looks like a lot of the bugs were fixed last year, but I can't really confirm that. The game was basically unplayable at launch, so that's how I view it. I uninstalled the game after a month of constantly crashing MP games. The SP was incredibly easy, even if you didn't abuse the poor AI.

At launch, the game was a 1/5 due directly to technical issues and not being feature complete for MP. Reading the forum tonight, it seems like the game may be a 3/5 now?

I had never played Civ IV and bought Civ V because I love strategy games, loved Civ Rev, etc, but I just started playing Civ IV this week and won't be going back to Civ V until the expansion. If I were you I would wait for that.

I don't want to sound like a hater because i'm not but Civ V feels like the skeleton of a Civilization game. It still hasn't gotten any meat yet. It's basically just a hexagon war game. It's actually really bland right now and I can't stress that point enough.

On top of that there's no logic to the AI so each game will essentially be you versus everyone. So all in all it's a 7 on 1 hexagon turn based war game that lacks depth in every imaginable way. If you're going for a domination victory it's just `send troops towards enemy, keep teching up.` If you're going for any other kind of victory it's just `keep clicking next turn`. There's really no way to sugar coat it. That's all the game is right now.

Wait for the expansion. It's a really nice looking game and has a more realistic look to it than the other ones. Once it has a few layers of content in it it should be a really great Civilization game. At the moment, though, it just isn't.

If you buy it now at full price you'll play a few games and just end up going back to Civ IV until it gets better. I guarantee you this.

Reddishrecue, also consider the new expansion that hits the stores this spring.

Even on paper, the new religion and espionage systems make Civ IV's ones obsolete. Actually I don't know a single IV player that loves either of those..

With Civ V you get a Civ game that gives proper treatment to WW1, making the transition between the modern ages more smoother. (after expansion that is ;) )

With Civ V there's also the fun Cold War part with city-states.

Also many of the small details of IV I really dont miss. Pollution, building transport ships.. don't need those.

Civ IV is a great game, but I think Rhye's and Fall Mod is the best thing on it, and Rhye is creating a brand new one for Civ V. :)

If I go out to a bar on friday, next morning I'm gonna wake up 100€ poorer, with a headache feeling like Naresuan's Elephant stomping my head and listening how my wife demands me to get up and go to Ikea with her, when all I would like to do is sleep and dream about the upcoming Gods and Kings expansion for Civ V, where I'm the true ruler and decide if Ikea shall prosper or burn to the ground.

So.. 30 euros is such a small cash for a game with hundreds of hours of enjoyment, and with the upcoming expansion a silly amount of new stuff. :)

I think it's a parallel game to Civ 4. It won't really replace it, but it is nice in it's own way. The expansion will probably bring Civ 5 closer to Civ 4, but we don't know until it's out. If you are still unsure, just wait until Civ 5 is on sale. You can get it half price quite often.

I'd say yes if you can get it on sale. It's not worth $50 or $60, but it should be much cheaper now. I hated this game when it first came out, but I kinda sorta like it now. The late game still suffers (to be fair Civ4 late game is tedious as well), but the early game is improved over the original before patches.

I'm sure civ5 will go on sale as part of the promotion just before or around the time of release of the Gods and Kings expansion.

well if i were you i would wait until after the expansion and see peoples reaction. I diddnt find anything to hate about CiV per se.......but its nothing, and i mean NOTHING compared to Civ 4. I wont be buying the expansion unless people on this forum say its the second coming. A little peeved actually as it is probably going to make it the game it should have been at release.

I'd say don't get it right away. Civ5 still needs a lot of work. It's likely to get better and cheaper in the future; and it really needs it, because currently it is not as good as Civ4 - especially if you take into account the quality of Civ4 mods.

So I say 'no, you should not get it.'

Wait till the expansion and the eventual patches. A year may give it time to grow. No point paying to beta test.

I got it for like 12€ with dlc on last year's steam sale and it is definetly worth that amount. While it is not perfect, for this money I put in a lot of hours and got decent entertainment out of it. Looking back, I would not put up more than 20-25 € for the game because it has some obvious shortcomings when playing the AI in singleplayer

Buy it or dont buy it. I am not getting paid by firaxis/2k to sell their games....
