I was nearly crying the other day.

I just got a new PC, a quad core with Vista and I tried to install SMAC and AC. And..... you guessed it.... IT DON'T LIKE IT!!!

I nearly cried! I love that game so much! sniff

But then I emailed an old friend of mine (gotta love facebook for old friends), who also loved this game from the good old days, and he asked me if I had ever played Civ IV.

I said no as I was more interested in Sci Fi than alternative history. He gave me a verbal slap and told me Civ IV was the best thing since the invention of the hammer.... yes he did say that... sorry.

I thought "oh I'll give it a go...." so I ordered the Civ 4 Complete box set and it should arrive sometime next week.

I told my friend I ordered it and he then sent me an email entitled "Sneaky Present" and in that it has a link to the PLANTETFALL MOD!!!

YIPEEEE!!!

The sneaky git didn't tell me what I was going to get with CIV 4 so this was a REAL pleasure of a surprise!

Now I know this is not a direct conversion, but this is going to really make me happy, I know it! I hear nothing but good things about this.

So all I really wanted to say (and should have said so in less words) is:
THANK YOU!!!!

Going to be sat at the letter box like a hound waiting for a biscuit!

AFAIK It should be possible to make SMAC work under Vista.

Gotta just update you here.

So I scouted for the vista fix, found I could get the SMAC and Alien x-fire working under vista! GREAT!

But, I have to add that I installed the mod a few days ago, and I've actually gone two nights without enough sleep because of it!!!

I set my alarm in game last night, and just out right ignored it!

Damn Spartans went and declared war on me, an immediately took a brand new base I had! Right before the alarm went off!!!

So I slammed the ok button on the alarm and mobilized the troops.

I threw a few drop troops in there, some helicopters and won the base back! Woo hoo!

THEN the utter b***ards went and sneaky attacked one of my easterly bases and I wipes out my troops there. I manage to kill the copter that made the attack, but just before I got back in the base with some infuntry, a bloody mind worm takes the base!!

Then my wife shouts at me from upstairs and realise it's 1.30 am!!!!

Thanks for this mod! it rocks!In many ways it's better than SMAC because of the CIV4 engine!

Ok..... this is weird..... Just upgraded to Vista 64 bit and SMAC works GREAT!!!!!! How odd. 32 bit just crapped out on me all the time.

Not that I'm complaining, but I'm finding myself playing Planetfall more and more instead of this, so.......

I second your thanks. I actually like this version better than the original, especially since it looks more mod friendly. The gameplay of planetfall seems more streamlined and creatively uses many of the features from vanilla civ 4

QFT. I think Maniac has done an amazing job of capturing the flavor of SMAC without copying SMAC.
