Is there anyone is this thread (or forum) who doesn't open Tradition first?

I sometimes go liberty. I go tradition unless I see some really juicy city spots that I just have to have, like a faith mountain or other really nice NW. Probably liberty only a third of the time.
Popping a prophet as the free GP from liberty is another way to get a dominant religion. If I think I can get the world religion I sometimes do that too.

Liberty may not be the better tree, but it makes the game so much more fun to play wide. I have wars constantly in my games. If you build 4 cities early game, war is very likely to come to you. 5 cities, and it's going to happen in the next couple of turns, probably from 2 civs. Playing on emperor, large +4 additional civs. This is much more fun than Deity - Tradition - Consulates - Rationalism every game.

I go for the shrine unless I've decided to play a faith-indifferent game. Depending on the start, some of the pantheons can have a huge impact.
I sometimes go Liberty if I feel like I'd have fun spamming cities. This tends to be a "that sounds fun" type of game rather than trying to get a high score. Typically I'll pick Rome for the building bonus and go from there.

well, for optimal play, I think that
legalism/scout/scout/library/granary/water mill/settlers/other food/production/science/nat college/some archers (not sure of optimal order on this) >>> monument/shrine
If you want to not go tradition/consulates/rationalism though, then feel free to have fun! Next game I'm going to try to go away from these game breaking policy tree choices because I feel like trying new stuff will be fun.

I usually can't bring myself to build a Monument if I know I'm going to go Tradition. I know it gets you there faster, but still...
With luck, I get a +20 culture ruin, and it becomes senseless. Just choose Tradition opener, and maybe Honor if I see lots of barbarians and don't want to be overrun.
The main question for me is whether to go Tradition first or Liberty. That free settler helps a lot. If I'm going Liberty, then definitely build a Monument.
