Pirates (1987) ---> Pirates (2004)
Civilization (1991) ---> Civ2 (1996), Civ3 (2001), Civ4 (2005)
Railroad Tycoon (1990) ---> Railroads (2006)

So.... the last original game from Sid is Gettysburg, ten years ago. Firaxis is 100% a remakes company. Which is good, because Civ deserves development, but will we ever see a new Sid Meier's game or it's going to be remakes over remakes ? In that case, please make SMAC next ;)

Agreed. :)

BTW it doesn't bother me so much about new/original games. Not that a "sequel" is necessarily a negative. Plenty of movies etc surpass the 1st one, and they stand in their own regard. Besides, chances are, I personally would like a sequel to Civ or SMAC more than I would like a brand new concept. ;)

If we ever get something new from Sid (or Firaxis, I dont know how much design work Sid actually does nowadays), I hope it will be as innovative as Will Wright's Spore.

I loved Civ2 - played it all the time. I never loved Civ3. Too irritating. I was a year late to Civ4 because of my experience with Civ3. I finally bought it and played it. It is fun again. I am SO glad that they got rid of pollution and city revolts. Even naval units seem more useful.

CIV4 is massively different than CIV3.

CIV was preachy and irritating. CIV4 is fun.

It's still basically the same game, but with improved and changed gameplay. It's not really "innovative".

LATE EDIT: However, I must say that the modding abilities of the game is exceptional.

There was the game SimGolf, which was innovative and fun, if not a very serious Sim effort. :)

Your forgetting a great game of Colonization!

Though not a Sid game but greatly influenced, Master of Magic.

I would like to see what kind of a 4x space game Sid could come up with. Something akin to Master of Orion would be very nice to see.

Sim Golf was great fun, I would love for Sid to take on a new major project.

Firaxis is definitely not an all-sequel-recently company. They just released "CivCity: Rome" months ago.

If it ain't broke don't fix it.

Firaxis is very happy and snug as a bug in a rug. I'm perfectly fine with them simply continuing the Civ series, as I am certain that each new version of Civ will be innovative and build upon the previous sucesses.

Having spent seven years with Turbine games and watching them completley neglect the wonderful Asheron's Call game, while trying to put out one failed 'new hit' after another, I know there is nothing wrong with a company realizing where their strength is and sticking with it.

To be fair, that game was developed by FireFly studios.

I've not said Firaxis should stop making new civ games, I just asked if in your opinion we will see Sid's genius giving birth to a break-through, brand new game again.

You know, when Civilization I came out, all I could think was "wow". All the other civ games were great, and I played them a lot. But I never got that amazing feeling again. Maybe it's not even possible anymore, after 30 years of game industry. All the games look the same, month after month...

Look up Spore, even if it combines many game genres (the civ games even get represented at one stage in the game), it feels very innovative.

Well, I for two, would love to see them remake the Civil War series. Perhaps make it along the lines of Total War. But also have all of the historical battles fought there. I would like to see a battle of Shiloh.
