Sig Length: Blech

It is implied in the forum rules:

Your sig definitely didn't meet those bolded tests. Everyone knows that the more than 5 line rule is based on the standard forum text size. We allowed people to have 6 lines if they used size=1.

I also stated recently that I will delete any sig that I considered annoying without warning.

I didn't hear either of those (the first of which is positive). I think that was before I started to read Site Feedback. I'm really sorry TF :(.

EDIT: The limit is increased to 800 chars now. Should be enough for most people...

Thank you! I do agree with WillJ though, but no matter, 800 is fine, I think.

Why have a character limit at all, though?
I completely agree. For example, I know of one poster that has a link for every letter in a sentence...

Do the links have to be absolute? If you could pass relative paths like /showthread.php?p=1824925 in the URL tags, it could solve a lot of problems for a lot of people, and speed up load times as well.

Because it's php, I don't think this will work, but I'm not sure.

Geez, any set of rules must be general and imply many things. If it was specific, an abusive user could say "well it doesn't explicitely say that so I can do it anyway." The rules would be like 10 pages long, and people would still find loopholes. Just because it doesn't say that it doesn't mean it's now allowed.

No problem (well, with me anyways).

Because mods are getting sick of telling people to shorten their sigs, and even sicker when they're ignored, and sickest when they then have to wave to TF (the Boss) to handle this small matter.

Good on the disabled sig option for individuals.

Is it possible to make the Sig have a limit as to how many lines it can be, once you preview it (which I like, btw . . . )?

The 800 Characters thing seems silly, as I am sure that mine is far over 800 Characters, but making it 5-6 lines Max would do the trick . . . and is my Sig too long? My resolution is set high, I can't tell . . .

I am really confused now. I was told to reduce my sig, which was about seven or eight lines on small font.

Now I get nervous each time I have to update my sig while some people have sigs that are way longer...

I wasn't aware sigs being too long is such a big problem. I think I've noticed less than 10 people with sigs too long during my time here, although maybe I'm just not observant enough.

That's 'cause we've been cracking down on them, as soon as we see them.

But we can't be everywhere to catch all of them. ;)

Just keep it within the said limits; don't use any wildly animated smilies and you'll be fine.

It's really quite simple. ;)

FYI, if you have lots of thread URLs in your sig, you may want to re-do your sig. vB 3.0 has alot shorter URLs. For example, instead of threadid= , now it's just t=.

What's with people and long sigs anyway?

Good tip, for both writing inter-thread links in both posts and sigs :).

This is from the person who hasn't changed his sig since first arriving here? :p

Yours is ok. Height-wise.

Oh, and its not ok otherwise? (j/k)

@Goober: I like your idea, but I don't think that's possible.

Thanks. Well, you can just preview it. hat will do it the same, right? Now, what about your resolution? When you preview it with a larger resolution, will it look like 5 lines, but be more at a smaller resolution? How does that work? Does that make sense? Maybe, but at this time of the night, maybe not . . . I need more sleep . . .

It doesn't have to be long in length to be long in characters if you have links.

How about 500 characters, discouting VB code? Is that possible?
