silly question

The Byzantines called themselves Roman, until they got very weak in 1204 A.D. Then they started calling themselves Greek.
Actually Byzantines called themselves Roman from the rise till the fall of their empire, while everybody else called them greek.

Whenever I play a scenario -mod with the Byzantines included I think they are always overpowered in an unrealistic way.Whereas their massive lands and technological superiority they had reflects on their game strenght, their neverending civil conflicts over the crown and their unmatched corruption cant do so.I dont know what could be done in order to avoid ruining balance, maybe a negative leader trait such as "corrupted".Baah too much:hammer2:

I think it would be wonderful if there was a mod-on-mod that made Byzantines playable. I've always personally loved the Byzantines and wondered how you could play them, if at all.

Perhaps for balance and realism, other civs could naturally have a diplomacy hit with them - the Byzantines were not well-liked by most.

I really don't know much about this but would it be a good idea if Constantinople was weakned with less defenders and so is quickly captured by Europeans to stimulate the Latin empire, that way forces can continue invading eastwards through a European Constantinople, towards the holy land until the Ottomans spawn, breaking the route to the east and thus ending the crusades?

How about just giving european civs with christianity as their state religion open borders with them? kinda historically accurate (the first few crusades wen through their and they did have a bit of trade with russia)

How would you declare war on them if you wanted to and were christian?

If Byzantium were made playable I think controlling all the old Roman Empire is a must (maybe minus england and france...) This is what they historicaly craved. I believed they recaptured much of the old empire at one point and attemptd to go for Spain but only got a small southern stretch of coastland. By reclaiming the empire Byzantium would in a way balance as its efforts wouldn't go to Russia as smeone else said, but souly to recapturing the extensive empire, there would be no time to waste. The empire could perhaps have a limit time for the UHV of being recaptured before the Civs meant to be occupied such as Spain and France spawn, but this would mean a very quick deadline, but then again their efforts of revival were short lived. Another UHV could be to mantain some level of control in the East and not lose the capital or Greece until around 1400AD, just an idea I don't know if any of this is feasible it's just what I'd do if it was simple/I had a clue how lol. Of course if this was to happen then Europe would have to be littered by barbarian states for Byzantium to reclaim.
