Simple but complex question.

Hello, this is my first post and I am looking for some help. Since Civ3 will never have a demo(not sure why a 50-100 turn demo wouldn't be ok or a scenario) I can never determine if I like it, so I was looking for some guidance. I play many types of game that come out(FPS, RTS and RPGs) and have had a giant urge to play Civ3 since the release but never was sure what I would do. I have played demos of HOMM3 and AoW and enjoyed those a lot. I am currently playing Dungeon Siege but really get the urge for more strategy that a game like that allows. What should make me want to play this game? I know it has a giant following but should I consider other aspects in my decision? I know that is very vague but I am not sure how to ask this question.

Most likely you can find a copy of Civ2 somewhere for free, or borrow it from a friend or something. Try that. If you like Civ2, you'll like Civ3 even more. If you don't like Civ2, most probably you wouldn't enjoy civ3...the concept just grabs some people and not others. Or you might be able to grab a copy of Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri for bargain basement prices (I've seen it for $5) That's even more similar to Civ3, and it's good to have to play MP.

Civilisation need a huge investement of time, even for a simple game, so you will need several hour just learn how to play. Read the war accademy on this site will help you a lot and save you time. The game is very addictive once you begin to understand it. Maybe you should rent it first if possible in your country.

p.s. use patch 1.16 on this site, because some fonction dont work on original version, and i dont like the latest patch modification.

Tassadar, that is a very nice and generous recommendation! I can only confirm that (apart from the comments on the latest patch).

The gameplay is indeed very deep and multiple strategies and playstyles are possible, so it takes a while before you get the grip on it. Check out all the stuff on the website and in the forums to speed the learning curve up.

Civilization is about expansion, science, trade, scarcety, war, diplomacy, city building, and to find the perfect balance in all of that!

And i guess the very active forum also is a strong support to recommend Civ 3. But I am an addict too.

btw, do not expect something like Command & Conquer, it is turn based, but with all the things going on you always want to go to that next turn to see how things work out, even at 5 o'clock in the morning!

You could even download the original civ 1.

Although the game is much more in depth in Civ 3 and Civ 2, I first got hooked on the civ series with civ 1. About 5 months ago I bought Civ 3 after one week of playing Civ 1.

Civ 3 is of course, like many games, meant for certain types of people. Go and find out if you enjoy games like civ, and the only way to know is to try yourself.

You most likely will like Civ because many Heroes players also play Civ, and vice versa. I am a huge Heroes fan myself. :)

You can get the original Civ2 from Amazon.com for just $9.99.

I will relay to you my key points of debate in swaying a friend of mine into buying Civ III. Both he and I were entirely new to turn-based PC games (being older, I consider myself more of a square than usual - missing out on the previous Civs).
Hope you can relate.

Remember playing Risk? Axis and Allies? The true strategy involved in these games?
Did you and your best friend(s) sit around for hours upon hours glued to the rolling of dice? Did you ever actually care about the fate of a battle between two piles of plastic pieces?
Then Civ III is where it is at, my friend.
Statego begat Risk, Risk begat Axis & Allies, Axis & Allies begat Civ III, and then some!
Prepare to have no life for a month or two.

My friend bought it, got hooked, and now explains to me what it is I am doing wrong in the game, heh. The ingrate.
