Siphon Gold Broken

I was just playing and got siphoned funds for more money than was in my treasury. First of all there is no way that should be possible. Then it caused bankruptcy and my entire country goes into a rebellion which can never be ended. Amenities keep dropping each turn after that more and more negative and ever more rebels spawn for an endless cycle that essentially ends the game. For a single spy to be able to end the game shouldn't be possible. Also, there was no way for me to stop it with counterspies because more than one AI civ was attempting siphon funds. If you put more than one counterspy in commercial district, as soon as one of them captures one enemy spy, both counterspies are removed from the district and returned to Capital.

Too bad we can't do the same to the AI: never ending cash is not a player's bonus

By the way, you are not the first one to get siphoned this way. Is this happening post-patch?

You can do the same. You break their industrial district. It takes the AI much longer to repair pillaged districts (especially industrial) than it does the human player and I think this was done to help balance out the siphoning of funds.

Also do not neglect spy bonuses in later era, they become pretty important. I love that almost nothing in this game can be neglected anymore. Spying is no longer a mini-game - it is serious business.

I'm fine with spies being important, but they shouldnt have a completely unstoppable spy attack that ends the game on a single mission. That is broken.

Of course we do. I was refering to the gold siphoning: haven't tried, since the amount we can steal is pretty negligible, but i can't see the AI going bankrupt for that

Was just playing another game and same thing happened. This has to be some kind of bug. This time I had counterspies in my capital the entire game in commercial district. Was consistently catching/killing all enemy spies. However, AI seems to have infinite spies and even when it showed me capture or kill them, and shows me with positive income of 100 gold, my treasury still goes down into bankrupt.

A workaround to this bug (because that's what it is IMO) is to reload a save a turn earlier and buy cash gold from the AI for gold per turn. That deals with the immediate problem.

After that, make sure to have enough cash on hand 8 turns later, because that spy is likely going to try again, and possibly is going to succeed again. In the meantime work on getting your counterspies up.

Really? I have put two spies in my Commercial district and they blocked two spies from different civs in the same turn, so not sure why it isn't working for you. I do this all the time because I always beeline for the Great Zimbabwe... and counterspies are a MUST with that Wonder.

If if isn't working for you, you should just put the second spy in an adjacent district since it will cover any other adjacent districts. I always clump my districtcs since it is beneficial.

Breaking Gandhi's industrial zone allowed me to win a cultural victory. He just needed to launch hydroponics to win and fortunately my spy had leveled up enough to have a 60% chance to disrupt. Despite keeping my spies active in his cities I never got above a 50% chance to disrupt his space program. I'm not entirely sure how the spy system works (leveling) as I've just been going off how it worked in Civ V. Side note: The Terracotta Army also allows your Spies to be upgraded.

The best way to level up your spies is put them on counterspy in places where they would be attacked often. Then, once they are at level 3 you can put them in attack mode and put a new spy in the counterspy role.

Spies steal as much gold as was generated by the target city for the duration of the mission. If you don't keep enough gold to cover that amount then you can go negative.

The bug is that if your total treasury goes negative, it Never gets positive. (Essentially your positive gold balance doesn't count)

Yea, that's the biggest part of it. Even if you have positive cash flow you still go negative and there's no way to get out from the cycle at that point. Essentially what happens is the spy steals so much that you become indebted to the spy. How does that make sense at all? It doesnt.

First of all they shouldn't be able to steal more than what is in your treasury. Second, if you have positive cash flow then you shouldn't go bankrupt even if they took everything.

Agreed Amtrak. I learned that this evening when defending my industrial zones. It's interesting that they went after my industrial zones than any other area, but I'm glad they didn't siphon money so it worked out well.
