The Eagle Has Landed

Quite an exciting finish as I anticipated.I got my ship built and launched ok but the Sioux came on fast with some power spaceship part building. They were going to get off a faster ship.I had 2 diplomats so I contacted and they immediately decllared war.I then sent a rifle to pillage and the 2 dips went in for sabotage.Got 1 ss part and a harbor. Then, when the Sioux attacked and killed the rifle, all the other civs came to my support and declared war on the evil Sioux cuz they had fired the first actual shot :).I used the next 3 turns to rush spys which went on numerous SS part sabotage missions.I was able to draw off the resources and their SS was left uncompleted. It was sure nice to reach that 6 years left turn when I knew for sure I was home landing in 1927 :D

Wow! Congratulations!

I'm trying not to study the logs too closely yet until I get a chance to play it out. But it is impressive nonetheless.

One questions...looking back at your 1020ad screen, with the elephant causing 2 unhappiness, why isn't your citizen unhappy? Am I missing something there?

Smash - could you put up a pic of your RD/RR route to Sparta?

I have given this one up. I was way too late getting started on Copes, which hurt my early research. I also spent centuries Roading every route to Sparta with no success. I had two of my three routes there; the other was to Thebes, which actually grew bigger than Sparta but was much too far away to make a road.

Here's my Summary:

I gave up around 1600AD. Tech was 96b/t, next was just over 900b. I had around 15 camels stockpiled for Darwin/Apollo/SS. Alliances with four civs (Greeks,Egypt,Germans,Zulu).

Ack! I've barely had time to get started on Smash's game after giving up on the GOTM, now there's already another and I'm going on vacation for a week. I'll never catch up!

Bravo, bravissimo, Smash!
If we rightly consider that samson was born on AC, you are the first human being to win OCC1 :goodjob:

I was quite happy to win the game.I really had to finesse the endgame. It was tricky.

Huge problem with trade routes most game.I had the connection bonus to Wounded Knee.It dissappered at some point and the only thing that had changed was the ai had built a city along the route. But in light of what we now know about connection cities it should have been intact...but it wasn't

The system for deciding what is a connection path and what isn't is screwy. No wonder the ai just mass road and rails everything.

I most definetly would not have won had it not been for enourmous amount of tribute. At 1 point my treasury was just under 10,000 gold.I had over 50 camels/freights stored up for the SS.Even then it was very tight.Had any AI had more cites I think I would have lost to a faster ship.Thankfully the main adversary was the Sioux who were completely accessible every turn by spys.

I gave up.

I have played till about 1700AD but I never got the road bonus and I don't know why. I sent a diplomat to Sparta, which I am trading with, with the goto command and built a road on the path that he went. Trade routes still bring in 3 arrows each though, which is the same as in the BC's. The Greeks are Democrats and I have built roads around Sparta but that doesn't seem to help either.

Good points made by Elephant and I would like to add one thing also. If we play another game it would be nice to have our city close to an AI city and preferrably the capital of a science oriented civ.

I was also frustrated with trying to find the correct road route to Sparta, which was built NE of Athens on the river. I roaded the shortest route first, then added extensions to make it "straighter" and try things like going due North from Sparta or due East from my cap. Being Allied is indescribably luxurious - I can do all the terrain improvement around my chosen trade route city I want! I only wish I could have founded the city a little better and bought them a few improvements. Perhaps I should try taking it away, improving it, and giving it back... As it was, I passed on several chances to ally with Persians in order to keep the alliance with Greece.

I have started on the second game and found that it is a bit easier for early hut-tipping, finding other civs, production and tech trading. Delivery of my first caravan also triggered a change in Supplied to Hides! Worth a try, Cliff and Tim...

I went back a few turns on my origianl attempt to try a different approach. I went back to where most of the map was already explored, so as to not gain any benefit from knowing how the map looked.

Now at 1300AD, have railroad, working on Industrialization. Trying to get The Corporation ASAP so I can deliver the caravan I bought from the Persians and the second one I'm trying to intercept from the Germans. I have a few NONE units spread out over the map as Barb chasers.

The Sioux have just discovered Gunpowder, but I don't want it becasue it will kill the warrior unit and make my rush buying more expensive. I bought a second settler from the Sioux to help finish the railroad faster.

Right now I'm at 186 beakers per turn, 7 caravans built. Will probably use them for Darwins Voyage. 771 Gold.

Not doing too bad, but far from where I think I can win the game.....

1788AD. All civs are allied with me still. 3782 gold, 16 freight at the ready. Techs @ 5 turns each. 318 science generated from the city. (3) +12 routes with Sparta. How did you get yours up to +15 Smash? Did Sparta build a Superhighway? I was wondering about trying to gift that tech to them to see if they would. I have the Railroad bonus as far as I can tell. The delivery payouts I was getting from bought freight jumped up accordingly.

I rushed automobile a bit to get Superhigways, but that left my units at Muskets and Crusaders. Hopefully good enough to hold if needed. One Cannon. I'm still hoping to buy a ship to explore the North pole. The Sioux explored a bit of it with a ship and I can see huts up there.... Maybe I'll just build one.

I'm basically researching all my own techs. I just traded for Monarchy a couple turns ago, now I'm working the Tactics path to allow me past Steel to get to Computers and the reseach center. I'm putting off flight to save Colossus since airports don't give any extra trade.

I bouhgt a few more units so I'm now Inadequate in power, which should make the Germans my Key Civ. I prefer that since they are small and won't really be able to use the techs I give them, well, at least much less than the Zulus would. I have 52 techs right now.

I waiting on building Darwins until i got the message that the Siuox had almost finished it. I also built the Eiffel tower; I figured it couldn't hurt.

The Tower!?..I spose this is a situation where it actually may be helpful.

My routes only went +15 when the AI was in Republic. They had an annoying habit of changing back and forth from Fundy to Republic.Fundy was +12.

I have no idea what was in the city.Maybe a cheat mode peak is in order.I know I did improve all the land around the city including terraforming deserts for them

They have been at Republic for centuries with me, but were only +12 routes. I got up to mid 1800's and for some reason the routes jumped to +15. They didn't gain a tech or anything. I haven't tried to compare if they city grew in size or anything though, so that may have been the factor.

Yeah, I was having to gift techs to the AI to keep them at worshipful every couple turns, so I built the Eiffel Tower and they have been staying at Worshipful ever since.

My gifts have been ruduced becasue the Siuox starting fighting with everyone (not me though). When the Civs are at war, I don't like to meet with them because they demand techs, so I've been avoiding meeting with 3 or 4 civs for now.

I'm acting as a buffer between the Siuox and rest of the world. I put units in choke points on the map to try and keep them from attcking each other and have diplomats running around buying Siuox units that are trying to attack smaller Civs cities.

My city has supplied 2 Oil caravans in the last 20 turns or so..... The only city that demanded them was a Sioux one a little ways away. I got around 180 gold for each one.

I finally broke down a built a transport. The 2 or 3 huts Up north all gave 100 or 200 gold, so it was worth it. The transport is floating around with a diplomat onboard to find good purchases. I just bought a Persian Ironclad a couple turns ago.

It's looking pretty good. If I can keep the Sioux from killing the rest of the world, I should be able to at least get the techs done, then see about trying to build the spaceship. I have 30 or so freight on stand-by. It might actually work.

Sounds good. I like the "choke point" idea, and buying up the warfighters units! Must cost a lot - are you not doing 100% science, or are you getting it from gifts? Looks like I should have tried the Colossus route...

1875 Ad - Just built reseach lab. 496 beakers. Reseaching Flight, so that will drop slightly. Techs @ 4 turns. I think I have about 10 more techs before having all the need one done. 38 freight ready. 4606 Gold.

The Sioux are at war with everyone but me. Hopefully that will keep them busy....

Launched in 1934; 16-3-3-1-1-1. I had it built with 15 structures, but I needed one more turn to get Fusion Power, so I made it 16. Landed in 1949.

Once I got to Space Flight, I stopped talking to the other Civs and all of then stayed allied with me except the Sioux. They cancelled our alliance and dropped to Cordial. They moved tons of tropps around my front lines, but never attacked. Since I made sure the AI never even got past flight, I didn't have to worry about any of them competing with me for the Spaceship.

I was expecting a huge war where all the Civs tried to take me out, but it never happened. I had about 42 freight left after building Apollo Program. It was a couple short to get everything done. I got all the Modules and Components done, as well as 7 structurals using them. I was slowly disbanding my less essential units (Crusaders and Muskets) to get everything done promptly.

My cash never passed the 6000 gold mark and ended with about 2,200 gold. The last few turns my trade bonus with Sparta dropped to +6. I'm guessing the Sioux were blocking my bonus path.

Some interesting stats:
With all of the Siuox's wars, they lost 69 Crusaders, 15 Calvary, and 106 Cannons, amongst other units.

At one point I had 100 points for the peace bonus, but it ended at 3 points because of all the fighting.

At one point I had approximately 25-30 military units.
