Artillery is another reason why I use to get as much culture I can. I've not used the outpost tactic, but since my cities use to be culturally strong (and with roads to the borders ), many times there's a spot to move the artilleries in 1 turn and start attacking in the next one.
Even if my armies were strong enough to crush their cities without having to soft their defenders (they usually aren't ), I think it is better to put down their size to avoid cultural flipping and having to place a lot of units to quell the stinkin' resistance. I also use to be lucky and destroy the civil defense soon , which makes my soldiers feel less like in a Stalingrad scenario
No I never destroyed the town just bombarded it as BamSpeedy said. I've destroyed the sistine chappel also. Though I don't think I destroyed the Temple of Artemis by bombarding. I'll try and see if I can destroy some more.
I like that *feature*. I recall, hmm, what would the legendary concert: Yanni, Live at the Acropolis have been like at the Greek munitions dump, the Parthanon, not been hit by a shell back in WW1? I view allowing wonders to be destroyed as a good idea.
