One thing I've noticed is that ever since the latest patch, the game has been running very slow for me. On lowest graphical settings, standard map, and normal speed I will be getting about 10 - 15 seconds in between turns by turn 100 or so, and it just gets worse from there. I have more than adequate specs on my computer: 4 gb ram, 64-bit, NVidia 8600 GT, and a dual-core 2.8ghz processor. Does anyone have any idea as to why FFH has been so slow as to be unplayable for me then?

I don't think FfH/Civ IV can use dual processors, so it is effectively using just one of your processors. I think the game is slower now because the AI is a lot smarter, especially at city management, so it has a lot more wealth and builds LOTS of troops. The large troops count and the more sophisticated AI double together to slow the game down.

Best wishes,

Add that to the fact that the AI will move around the massive stacks of troops within its territory for almost no concievable purpose.

Your best bet? Overclocking! Once my CPU was at 4Ghz the turns just breezed by.
