SMAC mod for C-IV - possibility or pipe dream?

So, I've been reading all this stuff on the forums about the amazing mods people have made. So here's what I'm wondering: is it possible to make a mod for Civ4 that will recreate the awesomeness that was SMAC? The basics of each game are the same, but differences in units, play styles, etc are huge. Still... from what I've seen, I think it should be do-able.

Imagine, being able to play Alpha Centauri with the Civ4 graphics, AI, and online multiplayer!

This has already been started on Poly, I'm even signed up on the team. Unfortunatly the SDK will be nessary to achive the vision of a full clone. The project is going along at a slow pace as most of us our still learning the ins and outs of simple CIV moding.
