Small chance of nuclear meltdown

Thanks for the info, I've changed it to 5000, which seems more resonable...
However, They really should rewrite it to beeing a time based meltdown....
How does modding and MP work ? If all files match then you can play ?
(match with eachoter?)

The chance of a nuclear meltdown is indeed turn based.
In the Civ4BuildingInfos.xml file the value of iNukeExplosionRand is set to 2000.
In the code CvCity::doMeltdown this results in the generation of a random number each turn between 0 and 2000, if it generates 0 then the plant melts down.

So,
  • In each of your cities with a nuclear power plant there is a 0.0005% chance of a meltdown each turn
  • With 10 cities your chance of all of them surviving a turn is thus (0.9995)^10 = 0.995 (approx)
  • The chance of all of them surviving 100 turns will be (0.995)^100 or roughly 60%.
I.e. you have around a 40% chance of at least one meltdown with 10 nuclear power plants over the course of 100 turns.
So it is unaffected by game speed? That makes them much worse at marathon than at normal.

Correct, the check is every turn without regard to game speed.

Strange.. I've played many hours of civ4 and build many nuke plants. But i've never ever had any meltdowns. Infact i would say its been a bit boring having a game feature that never happens..

I find that hard to believe, given your Avatar (or perhaps in spite of it? :crazyeye: )

   Well i'm no Montgomery Burns when it comes to running my nuke plants..;)

which xml i must to modif. for reduce prob of a nuclear disaster?

i have look many many of this lines in my civ4buldinginfo

<iNukeExplosionRand>0</iNukeExplosionRand>
.
.
.
<iNukeExplosionRand>0</iNukeExplosionRand>.
.
.
.
<iNukeExplosionRand>0</iNukeExplosionRand>.
.
.
ecc...

but i have many meltdown!

how can i set probability myself?

i want change probability of any nuclear plant disaster!
nuclear plant of my region or enemy

what must to modify? in xml?

thx but i change 2000 with 20000
i dont want 0%prob!
but i reduced it of a factor 10!

thx you all

Yeah! Same here...
I think I had one or two blow up in my hands but nowhere as dramatically frequent a phenomenon as you guys say!

I play under normal speed and havent had more than one or two maltdowns in any game where nuke plants are used.

But yes, I agree the odds for meltdown are only semi-reasonable for normal speed. Any slower and nuke plants are useless

In all the games I have played, I have built exactly two nuclear plants. One melted down after just a few turns, the second (much more recently) lasted perhaps 20, both games at normal speed. "Small chance" be blowed !
I'd be more inclined to build them if, as seems reasonable, they superseded coal plants in the same city and thus reduced unhealthiness, as indeed should hydro plants or the 3G Dam.

In my own game I disabled nuclear meltdowns completely(After all, even if you had a meltdown it wouldn't be nearly as disasterous as it currently is), then increased the hammer cost by 25% to balance it out.

instead of having the meltdown change (maybe just change that to a random event, like "power plant failure: nuclear meltdown/coal plant explosion/hydro dam bursts in target city. Lose it, cause a few other problems"), it should be +1/+2 unhappy people for "We don't want to live next to a nuclear plant!". Then you have your clean hydro, dirty coal, or unhappy nuclear as your 3 power options.

dont rely on nuclear power? or only put in places you can afford to lose. seems best way.

Bartonar, this thread was rather...dead. If you're going to go committing thread necromancy, please at least note that you're doing so, and then contribute something of substance to the discussion. :)

What is this?
Anti nuclear propaganda?

France is almost 100% nuclear. There are nukes all over the world.
Besides 3 Mile Island and Chernobyl (which were both due to gross negligence as far a I know) how many meltdowns or near meltdowns have there been?

In CIV4Buildingsinfo.xml there is the line <iNukeExplosionRand>1000</iNukeExplosionRand>, which I suspect is the probability of a meltdown. The question is: Do you need to increase or decrease this value to reduce the occurence of meltdowns?

Change it to 0 and you won't have to worry about it at all. ;)

In the 40 some years nuclear power has been in use, you can count on one hand the major accidents involving nuclear power, and none of them were meltdowns

It's closer to 60 years, and I'm pretty sure that the former residents of Pripyat, Ukraine, would have a thing or two to say about meltdowns.

AFAIK the area around Chernobyl will be uninhabitable for centuries, and that case wasn't even a real meltdown.

Ummm... it totally WAS, dude.
