Last night: Installed first released patch, played game. Went about 10 turns to verify it would play that far (before, had black maps and no faces, crashes to desktop) and shut down.
This morning: Turned on computer. Watched computer cycle from safety startup screen to MS loading screen to blue screen of death (for half a second) back to safety startup screen. Watched this cycle run for between 25 and 30 times, then called HP and Compusa.
This afternoon: Returned computer to Compusa for diagnostic and fix and was told something in software caused hard drive failure. Mailed computer off to HP for under warranty repair.
What specs I know:
HP laptop, Lance Armstrong special edition L2000
AMD 64 1.8
1gb RAM
ATI card, don't know which one though, as I just mailed it off...
I bought the computer in August, only 3 months old. Not once had a crash on anything- it has been the sweetest machine I've ever worked with, business or personal.
Only software change I've made in the past month was loading Civ IV and trying to play it, then last night installing the patch I had downloaded.
It's possible there was something on my hard drive that would have caused it to crash and burn, but the circumstantial evidence is incredibly damning for Firaxis, in my personal opinion. In any case, I'm out my machine, that I love, for at least 2 weeks and I will not play or buy anything from Firaxis or any affiliated software company again. And that's a real shame, I've logged hundreds of hours on CIV3 and I will miss it.
But not as much as I miss my entire sweet machine.
Peace,
