And not with any cheesy, gimmicky game set ups to make it easy.

*takes a bow*

When I first started Civilization V I put it on Deity, being a vet of Revolutions on Xbox, and got pretty much crushed everytime by massive numbers of troops and / or run away teching by AI civs.

Well, I climbed up the difficulty levels and now i'm back up to Deity and loving it. It really helps mask how lousy the AI is at combat.

Basically, this is what i've noticed: the only difference in Deity difficulty is that the AI bonuses keep the rival civilizations dangerous longer. That equates to fun. After all, when you're going for a domination victory on Prince and you have jet fighters and the AI is still rocking musketmen the game turns into a boring mop up.
Note: I play on marathon.

The game really doesn't change all that much. The only thing Deity really does is keep the your rivals relevant to the end of the game and force to you respect the them for longer in the beginning of the game. On the default difficulty, the AI isn't very threatening, but you have to at least somewhat respect them until, say, iron. Immortal, Deity, these difficulties I find just maintains that through out all the ages. What civilizations you don't crush as the game progresses forward stay with you, equal to you, just ahead of you, or just behind you. Just not waaaaaay behind you. Matched with the fact that they produce a ton of units makes choices actually matter when it comes to declarations of war.

I do have to confess that my first victory I was fortunate enough to get an island start (mixed bag, though, with the luxuries and space for only two cities) so I might still get overwhelmed on the main continent, but i'm getting there :)

I started to worry i'd be getting out teched and not have the gold i'd need and so I betrayed the Ottomans who were closest to my little island (about 5 hexes away on main continent) for their lands and puppeted their Empire. I was fortunate again because a land bridge connected the Ottoman area to the bulk of the continent that was 3 and 4 tiles wide, so I was able to hold the area off from the points leading Egyptians who declared the moment I concluded my war of conquest.

I stayed friendly with the Inca and Siam the entire game (they gobbled up the other Civs in the beginning) and kept the CS's from alligning with Siam (I was Greece) for the majority of the game.
I was about 6 policies from my cultural victory when the Inca finished the Apollo program and then all hell broke loose. Nucs starts flying, wars started waging.
Got the cultural win in the early 1800's iirc.

Awesome game. Really love Deity no. Kept me on my toes right up until the victory screen. Hope I can still do it when starting on the main continent. :goodjob:

lol Misspelled deity in the topic. Nice!
