i noticed that a lot of games i was looking foward to this season turned out to be flops. the more famous flops in my books are: black & white 2 and Age of Empires 3

2 very respected title turned boring fast. wasnt it only a few weeks ago that some take 2 execs were worried by the competition age of empires 3 could cause? DONT WORRY!

this really makes me wonder if civ 4 will flop. the only game that lived up to its hype is F.E.A.R.

From what I'm hearing, AoE3 is good, not brilliant, but still remaining a groovy RTS game. I'm still looking forward to it as much as I am Civ4.

Am I missing something, or have you played AoE3? I've never judged a game/film by it's reviews until I've experienced it myself.

As for Black and White, I hardly care. The first one was alright, in my opinion, and I was hardly looking forward to this sequel. I'll let others judge it first.

This shows that the gaming industry are running out of ideas, as all of them implement tried and tested formula that already existed and add a little innovation and marketing strategy.

OTOH, is F.E.A.R. released? I might try it if it's really that good.

BF2 is hardly a flop. I never had much hope for AoE3, being a pretty standard rts, or B&W2, since the prequel wasn't that fun.

Other than BF2, civ4 is pretty much the only game I've been looking forward to this year. The next seems better with a bunch of promising rpgs coming up...

try the demo, it was really good when i tried the demo and i heard it got even better.

what makes you think AoE's a flop? have you played it yourself? why is it bad?

It's not out here, yet, so I know nobody who played it first hand, but the reviews so far seem pretty good (though I usually don't put too much weight in them).

It isn't that the game industry has run out of new ideas, it's just that the execs aren't willing to try out new ideas.

I wouldn't say those examples are really flops...

AOE3 is still a good game, and BAW2 is also quite fun.

And at Dr.Yoshi, I think that your right on that one, but only partially.

People say they want innovation in games, but don't take it when its there.

But at the same time, the large publishers/developers could also try to encourage people to accept change more (I know some do this anyway).

Oh I doubt Civ 4 will be a flop. At least for me.

I'll welcome the introduction of full 3D graphics as, in my mind, would free up space for custom units as you don't have to render every frame for every possible motion for every possible function a unit may have. Now, I'm assuming, there'll be just a 3D file of the unit with mapping for different motions and the game will fix the directions ingame.

I agree with this. As development costs rise, publishers are increasingly hesitant to bankroll fresh/new/innovative ideas. As an end consumer, it sucks, but I don't know if I really blame 'em.

Black and white 2 was IMO a huge flop. There's just no gameplay to be found there. Peter Molyneux has lost whatever magic he used to have. I'm hoping The Movies will redeem him. AOE3 was just more of the same.
