Time to start assinating eachother over our next tech path.

Okay, the way I see it.. We can choose two 'general' paths. The path of war (Calvary!) or the path of freedom (democracy).

For reference, here's a Middle Age Tech Tree:

We currently have Feudalism and Engineering.

The path of war. With cavalry we can conquer the world.

But first, to Invention and then Gunpowder.

To freedom!

We need not conquer the world - let the other nations fight amongst themselves over petty things. Our conflicts need to be be focused on our needs - resources and luxuries.

First, however, we need to research Theology, and plan for the Sistine Chapel to be built. Then, I would like to see Invention and Gunpowder, so we'll know where Saltpeter is. After that - Democracy, and the increased trade and productivity that brings.

In addition, Democracy will bring huge trade values from the other nations. As a new form of Government, they will be clamouring for it!

My list:
  • Theology
  • Invention
  • Gunpowder
  • Printing Press
  • Democracy

Keep in mind that France and Rome will start researching invention after we sell them engineering, and they will research gunpowder after that.

Another possibility would be to research theology, then printing press, then education, turning off research when it's almost done, then finishing it after getting gunpowder free (I haven't checked, but I'm fairly certain the AI would go straight to education after gunpowder even if they didn't have a reduced price for monotheism and theology).

I would wait with democracy till we have acquired some new cities.
War-weariness is extreme with democracy, so let us expand a bit first.

A French city and a Persian city would be nice.

We should only go for wonder cities from now on.

I will post a tommorow over these options:

Chapel and Calvary:
Theology
Invention
Gunpowder
Chemistry
Metallurgy
Military Tradation

Full Military
Invention
Gunpowder
Chemistry
Metallurgy
Military Tradation

Chapel/Democracy
Theology
Printing Press
Education
Banking
Democracy

Any other options? I can poll up to 18 differant queues! (I've gotta have an Abstain and other option)

What's that weird looking knight on the tech tree? ;)

I'm all for a democracy grab.

This is obviously a chinese tech tree. And who noticed the catedral? Well, it is definetely not a greek one ;).

the first option looks like the best one to me. it will give us cathedrals, which are needed badly, and then help us get cavs quickly.

Demorcracy would be nice but the WW would effectivley prevent us from capturing cities. Of course with only hoping to do short wars the WW might be bearable. We should do both if possible. But democracy first then cavs.

Bah! Limited wars, fought correctly, won't have WW. That really kicks in with losses and defeats. Bring overwhelming force to the city that we want, and we're in good shape. Quite a few wars get fought in Democracy.

Democracy all the way. All of its bonuses will be essential to us in 5CC, but I would make Cavalry and Cannon a higher priority, as AI civs will be growing in size and will try to overwhelm us. France and Rome are now our potential enemies in the future, so we need solid defenses.

Considering that we'll get invention at least (I think gunpowder too; it depends on our research rate compared to France and Rome) free by going the chapel/democracy route, that would be a good start (I might go for a switch to the cav route later).

Anyway, forgot to do this earlier. There is a poll over this, it's in the poll forums.

Aww hell... I'll just give you guys the link.. Let me find it.

Whew! Found it! Poll is here
