took me a little while to figure it out as well. Easiest way to get it to work is to copy your save file and put a copy in the general C: directory. i renamed the copy savegame.civ4savedgame (keep the normal exension, can't remember if that is right). Then I moved the eventlog to C: as well.

then i just go to DOS and run this:

eventlog.exe savegame.civ4savedgame savedgame.txt

makes it easier with having to put the file path in there.

finnaly made it, actually figured it out by my "self"... :) but as big ben wrote I moved all files to c:\ and renamed the file for easy access and run the syntax. I sure was years ago I messed with DOS! only remeber the very basic tasks, cd.. dir c:\ and such :D

Notes on the eventlog.

It took 5 turns after the pyramids (turn 96) that I took Representation (turn 101) but this did not effect the game cuz had no specialist or unhappiness. Adopted slavery to but never used it. My idee to adpot represenation only when needed was to save upkeep money.

Got a early Alphabet (turn 93) to trade in mysticism -> researched priesthood turn 100 (start orcale build) -> Researched Code Of Law (turn 129) -> Civilservice in turn 134 (oracle finished 133)) I think this is importent for my early ind/sci monster of a capital.

After the completion of the apollo program (turn 294) I had a total of 2 golden ages to boost ind and sci. Taj Mahal (turn 297), and for the second golde age (turn 310) I only needed 2 great people. Bug?

Did alot of techsharing, to keep the Ai happy I giften some but for the most I traded for average of 10-20 goldpices! Might not sound as much but It ads upp giving me many extra turns on 90% science (loosing money like hell)

Also did alot of 1-2 gold per turn vs my rescources to get whatever edge I could get.

note on America: Not sure this is the best chooce anymore. Every game the refused to share techs to me even thou I gifted all to him and had good relations. This rarly happens with other civs. Perhaps Saladin is better?? due to the same "region" setup thing... In another game I had to adopt there stinking religion to keep them happy = losing money from loss of holycity

I'm trying 18 civs with Roman's in a central position. We're rushing Legions and going to war with everyone to maintain 100% science.

How do you put 18 civs on a standard size map?

Go to

-Single Player
-Custom Games
-Where you see the 'closed' positions, turn them to 'Ai'.

You don't ever have to build a settler! Just march your Romans around sacking civs who don't have iron or copper. Don't worry about keeping cities, (Just keep the gold flowing) one of the other civs will re-build on the sacked city site in a few turns.

Do the same on prince on a map like Great Plains and you can start that sacking immediately with your first warrior, after a while they will start to have warriors defending but you can maybe get 2 or 3.

Sofar my two completions have given me a 1682 and a 1660 victory with boths scores being right about 45k. The first game I didn't have Aluminum available to me because the only 2 souces were on the other side of the map in 2 different Civ's borders. Neither of them even had the option of trading it to me though i had gifted them the techs needed and built the mines/route for them. I got lucky and a source was discovered next to one of my cities. I like the Great Plains map, but it does have many down sides to it. It is a much smaller map even considering it only has a tiny corner of ocean. It doesn't have many of the resources such as Bananas or Ivory. I've uploaded my turn logs rather than posting them.

That must be very hard to do..especially since there are no Legions in CIV. :D

In my current game I completed the Apollo Program somewhere between 1350-1370 (it crashed a few turns before I completed it and I don't want to reload to see when exactly ;)). Should be 5-10 turns behind Drogear's run.

Notes of interest (sofar):
- I used the Great Plains map. You can get really crazy starts on it (I had 6 cows + 2 other food resources + 2 luxuries in a previous game for just my capital). It does have a limited amount of luxuries though and you can't seem to build the space elevator.
- I didn't have any forests around my capital, so I only chopped for my 2nd and 3rd city. I continued playing because it had 5 cows (which I wanted to try for settler pumping). In retrospect it probably made initial expansion to slow.
- The Great Plains map is pretty small. I have 18 cities, and almost 50% of the available land area is under my control. If I'd take out one of the AI's, I'd achieve domination victory ;).
- I used Asoka; for the organized (courthouses) and spiritual (civic changes). Pretty effective, although I really miss Philosophical and Financial. Next try I'll definitely not pass up on Financial again. It's essential for maximizing out research potential.
- I started in the middle and founded my 2nd city 20 squares away (to the west). My 3rd city went 20 squares to the east ;). (1st got stone; 2nd got marble). Financially this was hell; but it was pretty effective for getting Pyramids & the Oracle fast.

I think getting a finish date in the 1400-1450 AD is probably possible.

Yeah, I think someone quite possibly already has a sub-1500 AD finish that maybe just hasnt posted here. I've only finished 4 games, the 1520 AD one being the last.. havent had time to play since then.

Great Plains was good because it has that huge neverending river too. There's a lot of forests if you get a start on the far left or far right of the map. The best start would have to be right on the edge of one of those forested areas.

Arrrrghhh, that's crazy, I just came to brag about a 1530 A.D. victory and yet it looks like that might only place me 4th!!

I used Qin on Balanced; my capital wasn't really that great at all, (no flood plains, 1 cow, 1 wheat, 2 wine, 4 or 5 hills and a river right in the middle), but the area around it was really good (the entire northern part of the map was almost solid forests and rivers with lots of flood plains, it was ridiculous), so I continued on anyways. I think my capital only maxed out at round 300 research; I had more commerce in one of my other cities even despite bueracracy, so I built Oxford there.

I had 22 cities, 2 of which I culture-captured from the Mali and eventually gave back to them.. 2 or 3 different times. My secret to a quick win here was an accident; I got a really quick scout from a hut, and then proceded to pop a LOT of huts. In addition to my starting exploring warrior, I got: 3 warriors, fishing, and 3 gold huts. I also got 3 experience huts for 2 of my warriors (strength +2 on one and shock on the other) and my scout. So, what am I going to do with 4 warriors at 2000 B.C.? Well, I had found ghandi by that point, and I saw he had an irrigated rice square, so I figured I could send all of my warriors down to steal his worker. However, I did even better than that - his city he had only 2 warriors, a worker, and a settler, and so I managed to take his capital at 1400 B.C! I decided to keep it even though it was really far away, which may have hurt my early research. It really wasn't that great of a capital city (a crab, a rice, horses, and whole lot of grassland and jungle) but it pumped a whole bunch of workers for me so I'm not complaining.

I also did the oracle-bureaucracy rush, and before that managed to get the pyramids and stonehenge. I got economics before democracy, and actually used liberalism to get democracy. I think if I had maybe one or two flood plains at my capital I could have shaved off at least 100 years from my score, but, a guy can dream. >:]

The AI was almost totally useless for tech, except for very early and very late. I think part of the problem was that I tried to suppress them around mid-game so that I could build the Taj Mahal as late as possible. After that, I sold them techs every other turn for about 20 gold every time just so that I could keep myself at 90% tech. (I was losing around 20-30 gold a turn for a long while at 90% tech, and it took a long time to climb even that high). Besides the Taj, I had 2 more golden ages; 1 about 5 turns before the apollo program was done, and the other starting around 1435 A.D. I think. I finished the Apollo Program in 1390 A.D.

I should have probably gotten more cities earlier; I went down to about 40% research, and was worried I went too far, but I think I could have managed even more. The maintenance on those cities was a lot, sure, but each of them gave me 50-100 science, making them worth it. Oh well!!

Gah. Gah.

Set up a few games with Ghandi, finally found one that I liked. After exploring I found that I was on a continent by myself, with both Marble and Stone, only one square apart from another continent (so early contact), and lots of rivers, so maybe 6 cities with rivers running right through the middle.

But I forgot to disable barbarians (woulda been really handy to not have any defenders for awhile), and then I didn't build enough warriors (One per city) and barbs look like they are going to take out 2 workers and the city. So much for a run, and I think that was the perfect map for it.

Im not sure the greati plains are sutable for the best maps.

The IMO best startposition in is in the west at those maps where you want a startposition with 1-2 gold, 3-4 floodplains and 2-4 cows. This is importent that the capital an evolve to e super city after civilservice.

But starting in the far west gives you to little or no forrest to choprush the 15-20 cities you´ll need, thus crippling the score.

Starting In the east provides with loots of forest but no great startpositions

I have genearetd ALOT of greatplains maps and it seems VERY hard to attain the vital stone resoruce, but still not impossible, did it around 5 times with a decent startup. But still the map IMO isnt perfect for a early spacerace. But for an early conquest game it is...

I feel your pain, man! I just finished a 1510 launch - one turn off the (posted) leader. Gawds, that hurt.

I used Qin as well, on a balanced map with lots of flood plains. My tech order was quite different from Drogear though, proving that there are several good paths. I didn't build The Pyramids or go for bureaucracy, for example.

But I didn't feel particularly lucky, there were a lot of floodplains around my capital and nearby, but ZERO hills/cows/horses and my first three cities (the commerce leaders) didn't even have libraries until democracy, and I only had one happiness resource before calendar. And I finished with just 16 cities, so with a better start and an ideal tech order, I too would wager a 1400 launch is possible!

How long does it take you guys to play these games? Mine took like 8 hours each. I don't think I'm up for spending another 8 hours to play another game.

Probably more than 8 hours. I'll only play one if I really believe it will do well. Only really played one sofar (and the diplomatic one, duh) ;).
