Taelis: great score man. Im feeling the heat now, guess Ill have to try some more games to bust the 1500AD barrier! 
What score did u get? Care to rundown your strategy and eventlog? Im really curious how not using pyramids and civilservice rush can still get that score. If I missed something of value maybe the 1500 barrier isnt to hard to break.

Playing Qin seems to have some great benefits (ind) and starts with mining =musthave for choprush. Going for a try at the moment hoping the lack of Spi dosent hurt to much.
Didnt get a great, but ok start, 6 grasslandhills, 6 river grassland and 1 floodplain. Going to play it out today, if my GF stopps nagging!...

My 1510 victory took 3 hours and 17 minutes, which is probably about average for me. I don't micromanage at all; I don't know if that hurts - the governors do what I want for the gauntlet when set to emphasize food and commerce. Actually, most of the 3:17 was spent telling workers to build cottages, if I trusted worker automation I'd probably run the game on autopilot. I prefer planning strategy to clicking the mouse
I scored 73826 (4370 before victory muliplier). The map was a bit cramped, and I only had 16 cities, 2 of which were in tundra for resources, and 3 of which were production only. Two of the hammervilles were built at the end. So 11 science cities.
My strategy was something like this:
Bronze Working first for a quick REX choprush
The Wheel, Pottery, Writing, Alphabet, Literature, to start building cottages and get the Great Library as soon as possible
Calendar, Metal Casting, and Music next for happiness (Forges gave me +2 happiness, and I built Notre Dame)
Machinery for windmills, which I built on every hill until the end
Theology, Paper, Printing Press (an immediate +1 commerce from each village)
Research to Education and Constitution, then Liberalism->Democracy
Beyond this I'm less certain of my strategy, but I went for Corporation, Replaceable Parts (for +1 hammer from windmills), Astronomy, Assembly Line, Railroad, Scientific Method, Communism, Biology, Computers, then on to the spaceship techs.
I avoided Scientific Method because I wanted more great people from the Great Library, but I suspect it would be better to go directly for computers. When finished, laboratories trim tech times by about 1/8, so getting them 16 turns earlier should save 2 turns.
I built Apollo Program very late, but it didn't hurt me at all. I always find myself waiting for the Engine, the Stasis Chamber, or the Docking Bay, and I'm never able to start the last of those until long after I've finished Apollo.
I have some more ideas to try, so I might play again later, if I feel up to 3 hours of mouse-clicking.

Elizabeth's another good choice. Extra great people are awesome, and with half-priced banks and universities.
To be honest though, I'm not sure either of those traits make up for the turns lost to anarchy. I just choose Qin to be different. Hey, I dream of beating 1400 with Isabella.
Edit: It seems cottages still grow under anarchy, and workers still work, so anarchy's not so bad.
Edit: Tried a great plains map, but found I could only make 1/2 my population work cottages. Not good.

Launched in 1395AD for a score of 96645. It took me 10 hours, due to heavy micromangement of workers and occaisonal micromanagement of cities.
I played as Mansa Musa on a pangea map. I restarted until I got a capital with 4+ flood plains, 4+ hills, and stone nearby. I never got marble.
I spammed out 15 settlers, all of them placed to get 12+ cottages. A few cities didn't reach 12 cottages because of border encroachment - the worst was when Elizabeth built 3 tiles away from one of my academies and culture bombed me!
My capital got the National Epic and Iron Works, and produced 9 GPs total. In the 18 turns between Philosophy and Liberalism, I switched to Pacifism/Caste System and pumped out 2 Great Scientists. I normally get 3 scientists running Caste System as Elizabeth.
I rushed the Taj Mahal with an Engineer, using the golden age to get Democracy faster. I had 2 more GAs during spaceship construction.
Cyrus and Asoka declared war on each other.
In the end those two discovered Communism, but wouldn't give it to me because I traded with their enemy. So for the final spaceship parts I only switched to Mercantilism and Bureaucracy. I think I lost 1 turn by missing State Property.

I launched in 1485 for a score of 90971, but could have done much better.
I played as Washington with Roosevelt, Asoka, Elizabeth, and Mansa Musa. I built about 30 cities, but Roosevelt built the Oracle and the Hanging Gardens before me, I didn't have silver, fur, incense, silk, or spices (was eventually able to trade for 3 of those though), and most of my cities were surrounded by plains, so they never got above 15 population. With a better map, this strategy could launch before 1400 I think, but I'm not going to play through it again! (unless I think of a better strategy)
I chop rushed like a madman, built courthouses in every city, and was running 90% science for most of the game. I'll never disrespect organized again, that's for sure.
I didn't build the Pyramids, and the missing +3 happiness hurt. I built the Great Library instead to get a few great scientists, but looking back I can't see how 2 academies out of 20 cities helped. I think I should have built more settlers instead.
In the end game, I never built coal plants in any city, instead I timed the Apollo program to complete around the time I discovered the last space ship tech, turned off science and rushed the space elevator and the three gorges dam, then built all the parts at once. Worked pretty well, actually.
I was right there with you (DaveMcW) up to democracy, then my tech rate plateaued because my cities ran out of food. Probably also because I wasn't micromanaging enough.

Yeah I hardly built cottages early in my game. I figured if I expanded fast enough I could make up for the slow tech rate early with an extra fast tech rate later. Obviously it didn't pan out.
edit: An interesting note is how everyone says golden ages are worthless. I even said they were underpowered myself a few weeks ago, thinking they should be 15 turns or something. Yet we're all doing like 3 golden ages per game in this competition. They're obviously not underpowered.
