I've tried Screenflow, which generates an error, and Voila, which lets me record it but then dies during the export.

QuickTime works for the audio OR the mic, but I would like to be able to record LP videos and add some lively commentary.

If anyone could help me I'd be very grateful.

    Have you tried Audacity?

Choose 'Screen Recording' in QuickTime and you will record everything, including whatever you say into the built-in mic. Your voice will sound better once you're inside the game.

You will get much better voice recording if you adjust your Settings beforehand.

I haven't tried it with an external mic, but it should work the same.

Screenflick lets you record both; just tested it and it works. It captures system audio via Soundflower, an open source doodad.
