Some interesting XP-related questions

Hey guys,

I have some questions that I am surprised I cannot find the answers for, and I'm wondering if you gurus could help me out?

1) What are the XP boundaries for unit advancements to each new level?

2) What is the maximum possible starting experience (and level) of new units, assuming I were to specialise a single city?

In relation to question 2, I think I may have already discovered a partial answer:

West Point (+4), Great General (+2), Vassalage (+2), Theocracy (+2), Barracks (+3) and Pentagon (+2), yielding 13 XP. Am I missing anything?

Finally,

3) Does the stable give XP on top of a barracks? In other words, if I build a Knight inside a city with a barracks and stable, does the Knight get 5 experience points?

Thanks very much guys!

Nick

1) What are the XP bo undaries for unit advancements to each new level?
The actual equation for XP needed per level was posted somewhere recently but I can't find it....
But I can give some. 2, 5, 10, 17, 26, 37, 50, 65, it goes higher but even 37XP units are extremely rare to see. The Charismatic trait reduces the XP required for each level by 25%.

You can settle an unlimited number of Great Generals in a single city so theoretically the maximum XP for a starting unit is limitless, in practice however it depends on how many GGs you can get.
Usually settling all your GGs in a single city will not be worth it, the reason being that the value of added XP tends to have diminishing returns. Outside of a few select specialist promotions most promos are not a great deal better than the previous one, perhapps no better at all and as the amount of XP needed to get there increases rapidly it would be far less costly to get an extra promo in a different city by settling GGs than one that already has 5 ;)

Yes the knight will get 5XP.

You can settle more than one Great General in a city and they give +2 XP each. A Barracks does add to XP for mounted units. A drydock does the same for water units.

There is no limit to the maximum amount of experience possible from a single city, because of Great Generals.

Triple cross post, Jesus.

But I can give some. 2, 5, 10, 17, 26, 37, 50, 65

That looks like ((n-1)^2 + 1) where n is the unit's level.

So a level 10 unit would require 82 XP, then 101, 122, etc.

Max amount of XP from a single city, I imagine, without GGs, would be Ger+Barracks? I don't know.

That looks like ((n-1)^2 + 1) where n is the unit's level.

So a level 10 unit would require 82 XP, then 101, 122, etc.

That formula fails for a raw unit at level 1, which needs not 1XP to go up a level but 2.
I use L*L + 1 for the next level, where L is the level the unit is at, or would be at if it were given any promotion(s) it was entitled to. It isn't always desirable to promote a unit as soon as possible: circumstances may change your plans.

Thanks for the responses, all very useful.

As an aside, what is the most promoted a unit can be, if you assumed that two Great Generals were settled in a city, and if you take into account the selection of a specific Civilization leader (ie: because of its unique unit, building or traits)?

Why don't you do the math yourself?

You do realise that's exactly the same equation don't you :) you're just defining L as the current level, and he was defining n as the promoted level.

Let me translate mathspeak into English: the difference in XP between any two levels is 2 points greater than the previous difference, except the jump from L1 to L2, which is only one less than the next jump.

I propose solving this discrepancy by lowering XP requirements for each level by one point (i.e., it would go 1->4->9->16 etc. instead of 2->5->10->17-etc.)

Uh, no. It's not. L1 to L2 makes your "translation" not accurate.

Maybe I'm odd, but I actually find the formula much less confusing...

Which is what he said.

I still maintain that the formula is simpler than all this though.

2, 5, 10, 17, 26, 37, 50, 65, 82, 101, 122, 145. I don't think I've ever gotten over 70, which would with a combat 5, flanking II cavalry unit in an always war game.

What's funny is that after awhile, you start only using highly promoted units in sure wins, just to get them more promotions. Which kind of defeats the purpose of them being your best units.
