Some questions about battles

So, our band of highly uncommunicative, uncoordinated, and mostly inactive misfits has launched an attack upon a rival civilization. We've got one thing in our favour, though. Me. (Gosh, I'm humble, aren't I?)

But I'm war minister, which gives me some power to affect this battle. It also helps that I'm one of the most productive players in the game, so I can build some nice stacks of whatever we need.

So a few questions:

If the battle is about to start, and I don't think we stand a chance. If I order everyone to retreat before the battle, do we suffer any penalty as the attacker for loosing?

How actually is the recipient of the military medal decided? I want it.

Other that pulling out the individual spearmen every time my teammates decide to send them in to an offensive battle, what else should I be doing?

The DM can retreat all team troops.
The winner gets all wonders + techs from the loser + (maybe) an era win.

Most strength.

Retreat if you can't win, otherwise you have to babysit until the war is over.

They already have all our wonders and techs. It's the missing king thing. Is there any chance winning the war will get them back?

Or ... since they have our king, will they win the era if we win the battle?

If you are the attacker, and you retreat all before the battle actually starts, it gets cancelled.

Ugh ... it's suddenly giving us the gladiator policy, so no retreating. No, we definitely did not enact that policy.
