Well, I'm not the newest, as I've been playing for about a month now. However, I still have a few Mac-specific questions:

1) Can I download and use scenarios and maps? If so, any special instructions? (I haven't had any luck in the past.)

2) Is there any version that supports player start positions, or was I correct when I told someone that we'd have to wait for PTW or C3C?

3) I have v1.21g... What is the difference between my version and 1.29b2?

1) It is possible to download certain mods for the Mac version. Anything that is made for Vanilla will run on the Mac, but not scenarios made for PTW or C3C. You'll probably want to install 1.29b2 before downloading any scenarios. If you download a scenario, make sure that you follow all instructions when it comes to moving new files into directories. Civ 3's response to unfamiliar situations is to crash in a magnificent fireball... And if a scenario requires you to replace any "standard" text or art files, for the love of God back up the original files!!

2) Maps made with the Vanilla 1.29 editor support specific starting locations and will run on 1.29b2 Mac. However, there is no Mac version of this editor.

3) 1.29b2 is much better... The most handy feature, in my opinion, of 1.29b2 is stack movement (command-j), which go-to moves all units of a particular type in a square. So instead of moving those twenty Cavalry units seperately, one key combo can take care of all of them. There are also other benefits of 1.29, such as increased compatibility with PC maps (see above), improved reliability, an option to always renegotiate expired trade deals, and the ability to rename victoriuos elite units. There's a readme that comes with the patch and details all of the changes.

Two supplementary comments:

1. Some mod file sets come as .zip files and can be expanded with no prblem. Others come in Windows installers. The Double Your Pleasure mod does and, exceptionally, happens to unzip in Stuffit Expander, but others may not. In those cases you will have a Windows executable file called something.exe and the only way to extract the files from it is to run it on a Windows machine or in a Windows emulator such as VirtualPC.

2. Re backups: My recommendation if you plan to install anything more than a simple scenario file or map is always to make a complete copy of your Civ3 folder and work on that.

Hmm... Well, I've downloaded bunches of maps and scenarios, and none of them work. None of them came with instructions either; just pointless version history.

How do I know if a map was made with CivEdit Vanilla 1.29?
