Some Trouble with Fire

I had a problem recently where the Infernals(not sure on the spelling) had there main city cut off behind a bunch of fire which most of my units couldn't penetrate. I'm still pretty new to this game so I was wondering: 1) Is there any way or ways to put out fire? 2) What units can cross fire? Also in another war one of the AI's was killing me by using that level 3 fire spell that does collateral damage: 3) How exactly does that spell work and does it damage the casters tile like snowfall? Thanks in advance.

The tier I water spell "Spring" will extinguish flames in nearby tiles.

I think units with fire immunity (Fire Elementals) can cross fire tiles.

Finally, I think you mean ritualists doing "Ring of Fire". That damages everything in a 1 square radius including friendlies. If you mean "Fireball" though that is single target and it's basically like a disposable low power catapult that you can summon for one turn. You can attack to do some collateral damage or you can bombard city defenses.

I think units with fire immunity (Fire Elementals) can cross fire tiles.

Actually, a unit only needs 20% fire resistance in order to cross. That could be from the Fire Resistance promotion, but it isn't really needed as its prereq Magic Resistance promotion itself grants 20% Fire Resistance. The Orc, Angel, and Demon racial promotions also each grant enough resistance.

You can also use the life(?) 1 spell sanctify to purify the land back to normal.

You're assuming, probably correctly, that the offending tiles with fire are actually burning sands tiles. If that is not the case, and the tiles with fire are just forests burning, Spring, cast on any adjacent tile, is the only solution.

Also, unless I'm mistaken, Sanctify only works on the tile which the caster is standing on, so the mage would have to have the requisite fire resistance to use that spell to extinguish the fire (via changing the burning sands tile back to a regular desert tile). Alternately, a mage using Spring could temporarily put out the fire and then the mage with Sanctify could do his/her thing.

Thanks for the replies I'm still getting used to the magic system there are a ton of spells.

The Malakim's nomad promotion gives them enough fire resistance to cross fire, along with those racial promotions.

Yep, I just realised that's in TweakMod which I've been playing lately.

I'll shut up now...

Spring affects a 3x3 area as well. But if the flames are burning sands and it's right outside Hyborem's capital, sanctify will unfortunately do nothing. (All tiles are automatically turned to hell terrain inside Infernal borders, making sanctifying them impossible)

edit: Oh, and the level 3 fire spell is fire elemental, not fireball. but ya, I think he was referring to ring of flames, the ritualist (Veil priest) spell.

It's automatic, but is it immediate? It's been a while since I checked. I rather thought the hell terrain had to respread, even within Infernal's borders.

It's automatic the next turn. I don't know if it's Hyborem's next turn or just the end of the turn, but it respreads before you can do anything about it.

That's just not true.

Sanctify affecting Infernal territory will turn Burning Sand into Deserts long enough to either:

A: move an army without fire resistance into the tile.

or

B: move an adept into the tile and cast Spring.

In case A the Desert will revert to Burning Sand, and the Flames will return, but you units will already be in the tile so it won't matter. The units aren't ejected from the Flames, and the Flames don't harm them. If they need to pass through several consecutive tiles of Flames then Sanctify can be repeated each turn to allow them to pass through the Burning Sands.

In case B the Desert will become a Plains, which will become a Plains of Perdition - which doesn't have Flames. The tile is now permanently passable for all units. A hole can be punched through Flames in this way, repeating Sanctify and Spring for each consecutive tile until the destination is reached.

Yeah, Sanctify is one of the few Life Spells I've used regularly and I believe I've used it to temporarily clear flames long enough for passage, whether or not the tile is in Hyborem's cultural boundaries. I'm fairly certain of that 'cause I recall moving troops through for attack on Big H and having an accompanying adept repeat the process a turn or two later.

I'm not 100% certain on whether flames come back or not. I do know that I've cleared evil terrain that's spread into Ljosalfar lands only to have to repeat the process a bit later and I have passed through tiles that've been cleared of fire long enough to march through.

If you sanctify a burning sand in infernal territory and don't spring it immediately after, it turns back into a burning sand the very next turn. However, I believe it takes a few turns for a freshly transformed burning sand to catch fire.
