Something that makes me angry

Rather obviously, get a much better computer with a far faster CPU, at least 2GB RAM, a really good graphics card, etc. etc.
Mine has Vista, but personally I'd prefer XP.

I'm in the same boat as OP.

I built my last computer for this game, with all the standard modern stuff (2 GB RAM, 8800 vid card, etc.), and I still can't play large maps without suffering extensive delays per turn waiting on AI. Oh well ...

Do you think a better graphic card helps? I've been trying to get one for some time, but I just keep on delaying...

Yes definitely. I started playing the game with a Radeon 9550 and couldn't even play larger than Standard maps, and even then I was getting signifigant lag in the end game. I now have a 8800GT and I can play Huge maps no problem. The only time it takes awhile for my turn to come up is when I'm at war and have a lot of Espionage Points against a civ, as I'm forced to watch every unit on the map make it's move. But that's only because I have Show Enemy Moves selected. Mind you I've also drastically improved my processor since then too but I noticed a big difference just going from the 9550 to an X800.

One thing you can do, after you've been playing for awhile save your game, quit to desktop then reboot. There's some sort of memory leak going on and you need to clear out your system every so often, especially late in the game.

I'm also sometimes bored to death by those lags...

First off, I have: (lap(g)top)
64mb graphics onboard
512mb ram
1.6ghz celeron cpu

... which is quite pathetic.

Still I manage to play standard size maps until about 1700-1800 ad without suffering too much...

My solution: Try to win as early as possible :D Also peaceful games shouldn't be lagging that much :p

This is a good tip, I use it and it usually does wonders to your nerves (and the 5 mins it takes to reboot and restart civ are great to cool down a bit yourself :p).

Static unit animations (IE, the units don't move around when they aren't performing an action) has helped me out significantly. Unfortunately a lot of the custom units available here don't work with static units turned on.

TO OP: Heres a indepth ARTICLE you might want to read!.... lol ps sorry bout any typos, my editer had the day off. :)

1st chpter is called 'man don't feel your alone', your not the first. Try a number a bit larger like the one hundredth thousandth give or take a few .Nevermind the who that got frustrated overboard avoiding the forums for a proper vent they stuck with official tech 'aport' hotline at taketwo only to get treated even more like poo!
Ya IM not kiddin. If you include the tech forum compaints the 'general dis' in CIv4 and BtS forums and all from other fansites dating back to launch + yahoo/ebay shop channels, thats the numer one complaint.

The solution for this is simple or should I say, single. Cedarmill aka l ast and best moncore core of all time, paired with a dualcore or even early quadcore motherboard is the key
MAny don't realize near the end Intel came out with a sytem to prevent a hodge podge mobo/cpu match which led to the buyers inadaptabilty to correctly optimize between manufacters. This sytem resulted from some mobomakers bottlenecking the unused potential with p4 presscott. With P4 codename Cedarmill its EASY to 'gear it' or mybe better term, match it 'up' as plugging in more FSB,(front-side bus)is a huge performace boost never mentioned here. THis is Sad really as the better the mobo the faster it delivers all the other specs frequently associated here with speeding up the task at hand. In this case it would be speeding up the AI making his many built up moves on many 'flic' animated tiles (ocean n trees , which move with breeze CAN NOT be turned off!) with many trades etc etc..
Good news is Monos are so cheap now you can afford both. First most a Cedarmill, the rig all great games were designed to play on. System 2, the latest qaudcore for all your 2009 optimized games or, so you can enjoy waiting inbetween Civ4 while watching 2 dvds, game o solitare on the go, catching up here on the latest online forum gossip, n' mybe even book a commercial airflight, all the same long-ass turns just more to distract you, thats the the glory of mutli-core ;)

Vista IS a big advantage IF you get the whole 4 gigs of ram in play and yes, Cedar is one of the few mono CPUs that brought 64bit/vista support to the gaming arena .
The cedarmill is also unique in its massive amount of L2 cache. Civ4 is a higly taxing CPU game utililizing it to best potential takes full advatage of this 2mb of CPU memory. Cedar is a shrink set of the Prescott 2M so it also enjoys the most from the highest 'sticker' clock speed of 3.6, but no longer will dry your soaking towels in 5 secods flat lol
A top of line graphics card and of course ram a plenty are Of course still neccesity. For standard huge maps with only 12 civs it will never be that bad on much less but im talkin about freedom forever(all game) on a real-sim sized map, not some sandwich, 25 civs on arcade or Multi Player sized thing most people are stuck with. With a cedar mybe even superhuge on a 3rd-xpak type mod won't crash on you!

So in review. its the coupling of the best mono on the better motherboards, topped with all I mentioned that only end turn time woes. A small end note: Overclockibng the cedar is also said to be the enhancing answer. If you listen to what the large majority of Overclock.com users say the standard running for this CPU is 4.6 ghz, that on a deafult fan and CORECELL from ATI is a great program to make this run even faster.
OTHER SIDENOTE :The world record clockspeed was on a Cedarmill with newr mobo it was over 8.0 ghz and cooled with nitrious oxide . NO trouble with lag their I imagine :crazyeye:
