Anybody, perchance, remember this old gem?

The series ran from 93 to 2002, when it was finally cancelled. It had a total of 223 issues(every issue past 185 being entirely reprints), with Sonic originally only being 1/4 the content, before expanding to cover the whole comic, before reprints began to creep in and take over.

It had a variety of artists and writers, but unlike the Archie comics, actually could keep the same team more or less - Lew Stringer and Nigel Kitching as writers and Richard Elson and Nigel Dobbyn as artists.

Nigel Kitching liked to take the game concepts, or what he was told, and twist them to his own designs, creating such unique concepts as Super Sonic being an insane, evil being, or Chaos being a former general imbued with immense power. Sonic's not a nice guy at all, being an obnoxious jerk who always is cruel to even his friends, yet is always there to save the day as necessary.

The comic had a strong fanbase, and ever since cancellation, Sonic the Comic online has been run by the fans, receiving much praise from the former official team, and even being nominated for several awards.

The purpose of the thread is to discuss this continuity, and possibly the new issues as they come out.

Now, me being American, I never experienced StC. I read all the online issues recently and pretty much learned the rest from the very detailed wiki the team have set up about it.

I do relish the Super Sonic concept, a fresh spin to say the least. My only complaint is Super Sonic is like the games' Super - he's often brought out because Sonic's too worthless to beat bad guys on his own. Super Sonic has become one of my two favorite Sonic villains; the other is easily guessed by those who play Imperium Offtopicum. :mischief:

I like how they spin the concepts, too, such as Silver still being a time traveler, but this time, his future has been destroyed by Iblis. (That sounds the same, doesn't it? But if you read issue 255, you'll find quite an awesome twist on the game canon)

I don't want to spoil too much in case anybody's interested and wants to read.

Overall, I'm impressed at the high-quality work the artists and writers do, given it's all for free. Their forums are located at http://sonicthecomic.proboards.com/ as well.

Any fond/horrible memories with this series? Thoughts on the fanbase's undying loyalty?

I read an issue of it many years ago, I guess sometime during the Saturn era, and I think it might have involved Super Sonic, but back then I hardly read any comics at all.

I can see it now!!!

Yeah, I used to read this when I was small - if I couldn't afford the next issue I quietly sneaked into the supermarket and read through it quickly, avoiding the glare of the staff there.

Was good - the anticipation for Knuckles' debut was pretty fun, and I loved the game tie-in stories (the Sonic and Knuckles one was pretty brilliant). I think I stopped reading it not long after that, though a couple years ago I read through the entire series and enjoyed it all again. Looking back, Richard Elson was a pretty big influence on how I draw my own comics.

I never knew there was a comic book until a few years ago. However, I LOVED the better of the two cartoons.
