SOR01 - Special OCC

There's the gamble. I saw games (on monarch) where i had to research it by myself in the MA, because these lazy AI bummers didn't got. Wasn't wo importend in this game before. Was kicking some butt ;).
But thats a rare occasion. Lets hope for the best. Getting a GA in rep would be cool. With our mass of BG this could pump prod by 50%

Also i want recommonate the MofM (mousoleum). We can really need it to save money on the lux. We need Constantinople grow big.

The main gamble with Code first, is that one may miss being first to Philosophy. With the powerhouse city we have now, I doubt we would miss Lit.
Most games I have played, the AIs have been dead bent on getting MapMaking asap after IronWorking.

I would vote for the Code->Philosophy->Republic gambit.
I can not play for another 10 hours, in case anyone want to sneak in before then, feel free to post a got it.
Otherwise I will play as soon as I get off work.

Grimjack

I'd go for philosophy first rather than risk it by taking CoL first, esp since our research will likely be much slower because we only have one city.

Great Library would be nice but is far from essential, clever trading can easily compensate. The culture would be nice, and after Colossus I would start on Pyramids straightaway, either for the wonder itself or for the Library if we get Lit in time.

I would say we would have more research than the AI, since
1) We have a much larger city
2) We can run a higher science tax due to Colossus.

I would say it is about a 50% chance of getting free Republic. Perhaps more since we started out with Alphabet.

I wont go for it unless we have clear majority though.

Of course I did think of Philo, but only after I had posted :wallbash: .

The main problem we have is we won't get all our commerce (once the Colossus finishes) as the depotism penalty will kick in, so we will only get 2 per BG/river tile. Switching to republic will then double our commerce :D

I think the main advantage of the Great Library is the 6(12) culture per turn, but the Great Lighthouse will be very useful as well as there is only 1 other civ on our landmass, but we may be able to trade to others across the seas.

If we can get the Great Library before 10BC then it will give us nearly 1/4 the culture we need to win.

Edit: P.S. I think we chould go COL, Philo, Republic

Anyone have any experience on just how much more aggressive the AI will be as we have him on max aggressiveness ?
I must confess I have never played in that setting, and we could be vulnerable to archer rushes during a couple of thousand years.

Grimjack

Go for Glib after CoL and then repub.
Getyour prebuild on MoM and if you have to investigate the cities if they do demand. I think as Kaiser points out you can get the whole shemeer. Prebuild off the AI and I think you can do it.

Sor01, OCC challenge on MOnarch with max aggressivneness on the AIs.

We have no MPs, and an indian warrior right outside our borders.. Thats risky.

IBT: Indian warrior leaves us alone. This could haev been a very short game :)

2950: Curragh spots another landmass to the south, and is positioned to make a safe crossing.

2900:

2850:

2800 The island to the south revelas itself to be a small banana infested jungle rock.

2750 Have pulled warrior back for MP duty, and can crank up research a notch.

2710 I will not risk curragh on unsafe crossing, but position it for a safe travel to the western islands that were spotted by earlier ruler.

2670

2630:

2590 India has researched the Wheel. We have one turn left on Writing.

2550 Writing comes in, and I set us out on Code. Code is a lot of turns left.
Please use the Curragh to explore the unexplored landmass to our west, as it looks to be an island big enough for a nation to hide on.
After Colossus, do build a spear and a warrior before starting GL buildups. I am very bervous with having a single warrior as our entire army.
You may shave a turn or two off Colossus by working forests instead, but I think growth is even more important right now.
No barracks needed just yet, mainly as a deterrent on the AI, and an extra MP.

Take us further.

Grimjack

Note, we have invested no beakers into research yet, in case you want to veto.

Also I did NOT trade Writing to Indians, as I want to delay their chances of getting Philisophy. The risk is they may demand it and get it for free, but I reccon the techs we can get for Writing is not worth the added risk of missing our gambit.

Grimjack

@Grimjack

you played only 10 turns? the rules said we take 20 each. And for a OCC that would be o.k. Do you want to take the addional turns, or should we change the turns for everyone to 10?

Not trading writing... i understand the reason. Thats an additional disadvantage with the republic gambit. Hopefully this will pay of. But I think we should try it anyway, would be boring otherwise ;)

No, you go ahead. I need to spend some time with family this evening.

WOuld feel odd taking so many turns, with the ten turns being so ingrained now...

Grimjack

O.k. got it. Lets set each turn for 10. More change in a quite static game ;)
[edit] changed my mind about the 10 turns. just to short, and i will see the collossus :)

Ships move...

O.k. heres the log. Won't spoil ahead, but its quite boring

we get code of laws next round [edit: in two turns, don't kow how i can to next turn. Must have been dreaming ;) ) and need to trade for CB and everything else possible
when we have phil, we need to build the mousoleum. Otherwise we burn to much money for happiness.
no more units. We cannot build a sizable military at the moment. It burnes our research capability and we cant have more MPs under despo anyway.
No one i meet had writing yet. Hopes this stayes till we work on philo...

Heres the last world map:

Here' the SAVE

Looks like some good turns :goodjob:

I was going to suggest we build the Mausolleum too. It will work out great, as that will start our GA, and while we're finishing it off we should be able to get Literature and spend most of our GA working on the GL.

good job guys ;)

if we want to win in culture -- a likely senario -- we should try getting both GL and MM, for it's culture and benifits, as well as getting a temple and colloseum ASAP.

as for turn policy, speaking as the admin, the rules are flexable when it comes to that. let's officially set it as 10-20, you can do 10, 13, 19, 20, whichever you like. Is everyone okay with that?

Best solution i think. Right now there isn't much to do. When we know everyone and have something to trade, it will take some more time.

SOR01, Inherited Turn 1750BC

Looks good.

IT: Aztecs are building Pyramids...that must be the green border our curragh is next to

Turn 1, 1725BC: worker starts to hook spices...if India founds where the settler is then the spices are not ours, long term, but I'm not going to waste a worker move turn and will hook the spices since this is where the previous leader left the worker.

Science down to 70%

IT: blue warrior moves into sight of our curragh.

Code of Laws is researched, start Philo at max.

Turn 2, 1700BC: the blue warrior is Korea, who is also up a bunch of techs but down writing.

Barracks in Constantinople changed to courthouse. I'll try to hold writing for a couple more turns to get a head start on philosophy.

Turn 3, 1675BC: exploring

Turn 4, 1650BC: time to trade writing around:

writing gets iron working + 21g from Aztecs (we have no iron)

writing + 18g gets masonry and ceremonial burial from Portugal.

writing gets warrior code, pottery and the wheel from Korea (we have no horses)

Horseback riding is also about, so masonry gets horseback riding from Korea.

I did not trade with India because I want to keep our neighbour as weak and backward as possible.

Constantinople changes to temple, due next turn.

IT: Constantinople builds temple, starts Pyramids

Turn 5, 1625BC: lux rate still cannot be lowered until spices hooked, since 10% lux is providing 2 happy faces.

Turn 6, 1600BC: exploration.

IT: spices hooked

Turn 7, 1575BC: lux to 0%, science to 90%, philosophy in 6.

IT: India finally founds Calcutta to claim the spices. We still have our source, but only until Calcutta's borders expand...once that happens we lose our set, so we should be prepared for this and certainly must not trade our source away under any circumstance.

Turn 8, 1550BC: Portugal has mysticism at monopoly.

Turn 9, 1525BC: see a red border far south.

IT: Portugal starts Oracle.

Turn 10, 1500BC: meet Babylon, we're up 5 techs.

IT: Constantinople grows to size 7.

Turn 11, 1475BC: lux to 10% means we're at -2gpt but philo due in 2...still, wouldn't want an AI cash demand right now...

Turn 12, 1450BC: philosophy due next turn :)

IT: party pooper India demands horseback riding...given

The gambit works...we get philosophy and the republic, starting literature.

SOR01RepubGambit.jpg

We revolt immediately, Constantinople riots at loss of mps.

Turn 13, 1425BC: harsh luck here, we have a further 3 turns of anarchy :(. With only one city you can often get away with just 2 turns of anarchy total. This also means that Constantinople will starve back down to size 6 during anarchy, even with riots every other turn, since it only has 2 food in the box.

We met the Inca, who are up mysticism but down philosophy, code of laws and republic.

IT: order restored in Constantinople

Turn 14, 1400BC: we meet the Zulu and now have full contacts. We're up a bunch of techs; sell ceremonial burial to them for 20g.

Set Constantinople to riot again to avoid starving 2 sizes during anarchy.

IT: Constantinople riots.

Turn 15, 1375BC: last turn of anarchy, but Constantinople will starve as order is restored...I cannot risk losing the temple by allowing a second consecutive riot.

IT: the starvation is doubly painful as we have no granary :(

Turn 16, 1350BC: we are a republic, and our income shoots :).

Portugal has maths at monopoly, so I decide to trade: Code of Laws gets us mathematics (monopoly for monopoly).

maths sold to Inca for mysticism + 27g.

Set research to Literature at 60%, due in 15.

Found embassy with India.

IT: Inca building Statue of Zeus...whoops, maybe I should have given them code of laws rather than maths :D

Turn 17, 1325BC: curraghs are now exploring for map information rather than contacts.

Turn 18, 1300BC: more of the same.

Turn 19, 1275BC: not much happening.

Turn 20, 1250BC: in summary, we're the tech leaders, our closest rival is Portugal, down Philosophy and the Republic. We're up many more techs on some of the other AIs.

Literature is due in 10 turns at break even, Pyramids in 20. We have some wonder options. The most appealing options are:

1) Take the Pyramids, for denial as much as anything, and then start afresh on the Great Library, making sure there is no cascade to it by holding onto Literature.

2) Take the Mausoleum (5 turns), triggering GA, and then go for the Library, using Pyramids for a few turns of prebuild.

3) Stay on the Pyramids but switch to the Great Library as soon as Lit is available. This is the safest option for the Library, but we can maybe get another wonder too if we take the risk.

the biggest downer in these turns was Constantinople starving to size 6. Once it's back to size 7 we'll have immediate benefits, more unit support, extra gold in the city center, more shields and happiness balanced (at the moment 10% lux is gaining us one more happy face than we need, so lux will not need to increase once we get to size 7).
