Soren Johnson's Old World

Sounds too complicated, I can't handle games that are too complicated. Does it have apostle spam too? :D

I only play games where I can play Asian nations/scenarios, but the mechanics for this game look very cool. What are the chances that more regions of the world eventually get covered and more cultures? Especially from asia?
Technically, Babylon, Assyria, and Persia are all in Asia. :p Yes, I perfectly understood you meant East Asia.

I preordered this today, after having watched Potato's 3 hour stream. Looks very promising! And so cheap! Only 279 Norwegian kroner, which equals 27 USD.

Watching Quill's livestream right now on Twitch. Looks pretty cool. Only complains for me is it seems to center so much in ancient times, to be expected with a name like Old World. Game seems a bit slow, but he's still learning, so to be expected I suppose.

@Disgustipated, if you haven't watched hex Potato's stream, try it. He was a beta tester and goes into a lot of detail and does a good job making it look awesome!

I will definitely pick this up on Tuesday and really looking forward to the new style of this 4x game!

1. Epic's poor business ethics, such as bribing developers with lower fees to make their games exclusive on Epic's store, even when the game was already available for early access play and pre-orders on Steam and elsewhere. This sucks for the people that expected to play it on Steam and then weren't able to. Examples include Phoenix Point and Metro Exodus. And Epic is still doing this, too. They're going after games that are slated to launch on Steam and GOG and they're offering them funding to pull those releases and to go with Epic for at least one year. That's really poor form.

2. Epic's game client sucks. It's lacking in features compared to the others and it's terrible at resource utilization.

3. Epic is collecting your data. Not just which game you're playing and your hardware configuration, but also things like what media you're streaming. Do you really want yet another company collecting information about you? Isn't Steam bad enough without adding another one?

4. Epic is 40% owned by Tencent, a Chinese company with ties to the Chinese government. Maybe you trust the Chinese government not to misuse any of the data collected by the Epic Store. I sure don't.

Look, I think we all understand why Soren went with Epic. They gave him funding to finish the game and otherwise he might not have been able to finish it at all. But, please understand that some of us aren't going to sign up and install Epic's client just to play this game. I think it's OK for us to express our disappointment in the situation. Epic doesn't need you all to defend them. They're big boys and girls. They can handle some criticism.

If we're all lucky, then Old World will only be exclusive for a year and then we can all play it elsewhere. Ideally, GOG. And hopefully, Soren will have the foresight to make his own mod manager and whatnot so that mods aren't tied to a single platform. It really sucks when you buy a game on GOG and the mods only work in the Steam Workshop, or whatever. We all pay the same price. Let's all get the same features.

I play Phoenix Point and Gears Tactics through Xbox Game Pass on PC. I resisted Epic but will certainly get this before the weekend is out. No issues with you taking a stand. Have fun playing something else, there are a million things. I'll be playing this next week.

I am seriously thinking about getting. Looks very promising. I've been watching @PotatoMcWhiskey playing his 2 livestreams (after the stream thou). Next up is Quill18's video.

OK. I'm convinced. $40 plus tax on Epic site, delivery scheduled 5/5. We shall see.
40 dollar? Man, it pays to be living in Norway I guess, I only paid 27 USD in equivalent NOK as I mentioned.

It's $10 in Argentina.

It would be a good idea for Soren if he plans to release in Steam a year for now to provide Steam keys for those who bought on Epic and want them. The Steam keys are free for developers, and that's what we did with people that bought the game via our site or through GOG.

This does look interesting, but it also looks like an Epic Games exclusive. :dunno:

Looking forward to this greatly...I've never bought a game on early access but I guess there's a first time for everything. Is there any word on a map editor? Would love to make a map inspired by Civ 3: Conquest's Rise of Rome scenario.

Very true. Im not one of those people who has their hands nailed to the cross of steam though. I actually use GOG as a launcher as it pulls all platforms together under one launcher. And the Epic store isnt so much of a bad thing. My library now includes the following - all of which i got for free:

World War Z
World of goo
Enter the gungeon
Arkham Knight
Arkham City
Arkham assylum
Metro 2033 redux
Surviving mars
Close to the sun
Last day of June
Limbo
Mutant year zero
SOMA
Torchlight
Watch Dogs
