GP do not purge the holy city status; inquisitors do.Unsurprisingly it was a holy city for Christianity. I GP'd it - fine.

Aaaand again. Asked leader nicely to stop sending prophets into my area, he said he would.... Brilliant. Just friggin' brilliant. ... That's enough, I'm taking a Civ 5 break for a bit. I haven't even gotten BNW yet, was going to prolly next week, but I'm out for a while. This kind of crap is horsehockey.
Chill out! Religion is only one aspect of the game.
There IS a way to prevent them spreading, buy Inquisitors, I believe Inquisitors stop pressure coming into the city (or.. something like that). And the AI will get confused and avoid the city (i've noticed Maya has a tendency to go for Holy Cities often, I saw him hover around since I put an Inquisitor in my capital)
They really aren't as agressive about it in BNW. If you have founded your own religion, they leave you alone.
The fight is usually over CS and a 3rd civ with no religion of their own.
