Space Needle

Sorry to bust into the Seattle-fest here, but has anyone tried importing SimCity4 3D models into Civ4? Other than being 3D, I don't know if there's anything they have in common, but it would be worth a look-see if anyone knows how to manipulate both, as there are thousands of SimCity4 buildings out there...

That's an excellent idea. I just wish I had SimCity 4 so I could check the files myself. :p

Why not post this in a new topic thread? I mean, what did you expect to find when you visited a thread entitled, "Space Needle"? :P

To answer your question, even if they were compatible, I'm sure there would be copyright issues with importing sc4 3d renderings into civ4. Otherwise I'm sure they'd be all for it. In fact, I'd love to see some sort of combination of the two games, and perhaps even throw the Sims into the mix while you're at it. Think about it: You can play a civilization, then zoom to a city to manage like in Sim City, then perhaps make a family and move it into that city somewhere. And the actions in the other two tiers would affect them; i.e. if taxes are raised, the family's income goes down slightly; and if the city is captured, well, maybe the male gets drafted into the occupying infantry or something.

It'll never happen, not in a million years. But it would be so cool! Almost as cool as Seattle.... :P

I don't see why there would be copyright issues in this case. It's not like you are selling a product. For example, if anyone wanted to make a Star Trek Mod, they wouldn't have to ask Paramount's permission to make it, cause the mod would be free. However, if someone was making something that was going to be sold, then they would have to get a contract or permit of some sort. ;)

@ Agent 009: that's not quite an accurate statement of copyright law -- you do not need to be using the materials for profit to be violating someone's copyright -- but it's pretty clear that no one has tried to enforce their rights and to stop us. (I am quite aware that my mod borrows liberally from copyrighted sources, though I do my best to try to make things original).

That said, the buildings I'm specifically interested in are the ones that are freely exchanged among SimCity users (just like our own mods). I can't imagine that if we ask nicely, that the creators of this content wouldn't let us use it.

It's like a parallel universe to CivFanatics :D

Yeah you are right however, my point simply was that no company that made a game or something else for profit, would sue someone for using some of their content without permission for a mod of another game that was being provided free of charge. It would be totally ridculous and not make it into a court of law. ;) (At least not in North America anyways.) :p

CN Tower is far more logical for a World Wonder. It could take the Eiffel Tower's role of a broadcast centre in every city.
