Space Opera 2016-10-05

Just a heads up for everyone (NavyDawg, you might want to note this with the download link), you cannot go to the download page with the browser Opera.

Just a heads up.

This is great!! Finally someones made a space scenario for civ 3. I'm DLing at once.
I've borrowed ideas from Dune, Starship Troopers.

At long last, someone else on CFC who has read the works of Robert A. Heinlein, and Frank Herbert's masterpiece.

Red Door, thanks for the heads up. Rather ironic isn't it that Opera won't let you download Space Opera.:hmm:

 True, didn't even think of that. Downloaded, I'll try and give her a whirl tonight. Looks fun despite being non-historical. ;) :p

Miles Teg, thanks for giving it a try. Yes, tech trading is disabled in this scenario, for a few reasons:
1. Really makes you think about whether you want to build your culture, infrastructure, military, etc...
2. To keep players from racing through the tech tree.
3. Raises the importance of the steal technology ability.

This will probably change the strategy opposed to how many folks play the epic game.

Random Observations and Questions:

Asteroids are indescribably annoying while to trying to explore. The square look similar to Inner Space.

I'm guessing the galactic center has something to do with VPs, but what exactly?

What are the Smugglers for? I know they have a tech-tree seperate from everyone else and better starting units, but how do they win?

When did our galaxy become a bar spiral? :p

Thanks for the comments.

Yes, the asteroids are rather small and it does look similar to inner space. I think given some time, you'll be able to see the difference more easily. Unfortunately, I can't make my own terrain set, so I have used what was already made. I'm not knocking the terrain, overall I think it's great.

There is a VP on a planet underneath the black hole (there are four more VPs in the corners of the map, controlled by pirate garrisons). This is also a strategic location as it will be a major space lane between the north and south portions of the galaxy. If you plant a colony here, put a few stealth cruisers down there to mess with the other civs.

What are the Smugglers for? I know they have a tech-tree seperate from everyone else and better starting units, but how do they win?
Smugglers will pose an early threat and may limit expansion for some empires. Also, they control several key luxuries (along with the pirates) that will be needed to keep larger systems happy. They're not really meant to win. Plus, how can you have a space scenario without smugglers?

When did our galaxy become a bar spiral? :p
Since I can't make anything more intricate... The galaxy in this scenario is purely fictional. BTW, I think the Milky Way's center actually is a barred spiral, there are just more arms off of it.

When did our galaxy become a bar spiral? :p

Since new observations of the cold hydrogen radio waves. Just that it has like 6-8 arms though. (not all of them are connected to the bar or the center)

This scenario is awesome!

I'm loving it!

Couple of questions:
What does the searchlight graphic in the "city" mean?
How soon until we get some unique units? :D (not trying to rush you, really!)
According to the civpedia the "agriculture board" allows colonies to grow into systems. Is that possible in civ3?

Downloading now... I'm so excited to try this scenario! I've been waiting for it's release since you first started posting Sci-Fi units (which are all fantastic), so I'm glad to finally give it a try. So far the screenies look great, especially all the units you've done but never posted on their own. I'll post some comments soon.
Thanks Dawg!

Thanks, I'm glad you're enjoying it. Also, thanks for the questions.

The searchlight is the "We Love the King Day" indicator, so good job!

Colonies = Towns
System = City
Hyper System = Metropolis

Basically, build an Ag Board for city size 2 and a longevity center for city size level 3.

I hope for an expansion within a few months, but it will take some time to make the units.

NavyDawg, it seems your scenario is worth the very long download time (38,2kb on a high speed DSL-connection).

Thank you very much for your great work!:goodjob: :thanx:

One suggestion: May be it´s better, to leave the city-graphics transparent (blanc cities file). That a planet is settled and by which civ is marked on the settled planets name. I attache an example for that with an old Civ 2 ToT scenario from me:

Thanks Civinator for the compliment.

I did think about using blank city files, so it would just show the planet. I never tested it, but I think I might. Cool screenshot BTW.

I decided to go with the space stations for the scenario to show city size 1 to 2 progression. Also, I personally like seeing something pop up on the map when you make a new settlement.

This is the way your scenario planets would look with blanc city tiles:

Much better in my eyes. When a new planet is settled, there pops up something on the screen: The name that is given to the planet, the civ that owns it, and the current number of inhabitants of that planet. There is no need to do city size 1, 2 or 3 on a galactic map. If you only have city size 1 you can do a lot of nasty things with the city-size1 wall graphic. Imagine how cool it looks on the map, when a planet builds a "planetary force shield" (=wall) and a force shield graphic pops up and envelopes the planet (this is the effect on my Civ 2 screene and this also works perfectly for Civ 3).

And with that technic you can add lots of different planets and moons on resource files (up to 999 kind of planets) that can be settled in that manner. You dont need different terrain graphics any longer, so of course it´s nice if you have them. :)

That would be :goodjob: so  cool!! Please try to :please: add it into the scenario NavyDawg.

I've played around with the various human factions and heres my impression in order of strongest to weakest:

Peoples Alliance
Weyland Corporation (Strongest faction for a real person)
Divine Council
United Republic
Solaris Empire
Confederacy

More Random Questions/Observations(More rapier wit:p):
How did the Shadow Cartel cross the galaxy anyways? :p
What are the Nebula for? Their immobile and they don't cover any special positions.
How exactly do you kill a black hole or a nebula with lasers or whatever :p
Most important early tech is Space Fleets, can't have a space opera without spaceships.
Playing as the Smugglers just begs for an early invasion or two.
I don't suppose you could use an updated civlopedia?

do my eyes deceive me or is that an edited model of a Halcyon-Class Cruiser from Halo! how dare you...
