space race victory questions

Hi all

I just finished my first game (1-player, default difficulty, second lowest one I think).

Anyways, I won through space race victory but have a couple questions:

1 -- As soon as the final piece was finished, it said I had won the space race. I read about the game, and thought I had to launch the spaceship manually, and also wait until it got into space. Why was it an automatic victory right after the last piece was made? Is this due to the low difficulty level?

2 -- The cinematic for the space launch itself froze a couple seconds in, and then just went to the victory statistics. Is this a glitch of some sort? The game itself didn't freeze, just the cinematic was stuck on a single frame until it went to the post-screen details.

1. I believe that the automatic victory is for Vanilla Civ, where you win right after each piece is finished. In BTS and perhaps Warlords (I'm not sure), you have to build parts and then wait ~15 turns after takeoff to win the game by Space Race.
2. I don't know how I can help you on that. Probably your computer couldn't process the video well, so I might suggest that you could find a way through WorldBuilder (ctrl+w) to delete all other opponents after you start the game, and then there should be a video. If the video doesn't work then, then it's probably an issue with your computer.

If you are playing the basic game (vanilla as it is called around here) with no expansions, then the space race is won as soon as you finish the spaceship. Most of the people on the forums are playing the Beyond The Sword expansion (BTS). In BTS, you can launch the spaceship after you have completed a minimum of parts, even if it is not complete. Doing so causes there to be a chance of a failed mission or a longer time until arrival, depending on what you leave out. For this reason, the launch is manual. Once you launch, it takes about ten turns on normal speed for a complete spaceship to arrive and give you the victory.

So, the answer to #1 is this is normal, if you are playing the basic CIV with no expansions. It is unrelated to difficulty level.

#2 In vanilla you should see a "movie" in which the new "sun" shines in through a large port and a space traveler drops to his knees, onto the deck, out of the life support suspended animation module and then gets up and looks out the portal. If this did not happen, you either got a glitch in the movie, or your graphics card could not handle it. In BTS, you see the launch of the spaceship and then when it arrives the same movie as in vanilla.

Edit: cross post!

My laptop can't handle the victory movies either. I even downloaded low-res versions from the official site but they still won't play. All the Wonder movies and the intro movie play fine though so I'm not sure why this should be. I can only put it down to shoddy implementation. Anyway, I just youtubed the appropriate victory movies when I first won them :)
