Spain, so nice to play

I love playing spain, so much fun! Four corners is my favorite map type. Spain's RA is very fun on this map since there are numerous natural wonders easily found early in the game. They are also distributed evenly on the map, making conquest very fun in order to capture the prized NWs.

Nice tip, I've never actually played Four corners ever..

I recommend starting Medieval era with Spain, you get straight to conquering/conquistadoring those "filthy savages" (quote by Winston Churchill). ;)

Spain on Standard/Small Earth map sucks though because there are only about 2 NWs (less than other standard maps).

I think they are a bona fide civ for late era starts too, besides starting a game from medieval era with Spain gives a nice Rhye's and Fall Mod -feeling.. ;)
Been thinking about writing a strategy guide for them at some point.

Highly recommended Civ for those who don't have the Spain/Inca DLC pack yet..

I WOULD like Spain...if the game were better designed. As is, Spain is only fun when you restart over and over to get a good natural wonder close to your starting point. Otherwise, the ability is worth nothing.

Also, the only maps that should be Spain-Friendly are boring as hell (archipeligo and terra). I played a few terra games as Spain but quit when it turned out that the terrain on the new world was so boring and bland that there was no real purpose settling there.

It is fun to explore with Astronomy unlocked as Spain and zipping Conquistadors to new lands on Continent maps. Also meeting Aztec, Inca, and Korea while they are "Afraid" is also hilarious. I like to take Piety and Autocracy when doing Spain domination too to fit the historical perspective. ^_^

Two comments/questions:
1. Why are the people on the other continents Afraid of Spain? I don't have the DLC, but people on new continents tend to be friendly or neutral when you first meet them, never instantly hostile or afraid.

2. While I understand Piety (Spain is, and always was, a very Catholic country), I don't understand why Autocracy fits Spain. Wasn't that tree made to emulate Nazi Germany/ Facist Italy/ Imperial Japan? I don't know too much about modern Spanish history so I could always be mistaken.

Amazon map kills Spain. There's neither horse nor natural wonders on the map.

1. Uh.... the leaders of the nations that I put there have high Afraid values when meeting civ with stronger military, not because Spain has special ability to make people afraid.

2. Autocracy because Spain was all about domination of the new world. If they didn't spend too much money fighting dumb wars in Europe they might have been crazy superpower.

Spain's a "fun" game to play but its really random. If you find a couple of NW fast and early, you can have a cakewalk. If you don't, its a lot harder but you can make it work by taking them from the other players. As someone else pointed out, in many cases, you end up all over the map without a "real" empire.

In MP, Spain weak. Unless you get very lucky, your going to get hurt by everyone else's expansion and not get control of the NW.

It's that randomness that makes them fun to play. I don't select them for a hardcore Immortal victory where I'm trying to implement a master plan, but if I just want to mess around with a civ and try for some adventures, Spain is a blast - simply because it is far less predictable. You don't know where you will find the NWs, or when, or which ones. It puts a different spin on each game, even with the same settings. It's nice to have them as an option.

And being able to use a Conquistador to found a new city instead of building and escorting a settler to another continent is awesome.

I don't know that I like the embarked defense on the conquistadors. It might protect you from instant death by ship, but it allows you to be attacked by ranged units along the shore in exchange. Since the ai loves ranged and doesn't seem to build much navy, I know which I'd rather have to deal with. Actually this is how I got the upperhand over a much more powerful Isabella in a recent game, she kept throwing her conquistadors into the water to try to get across a small patch of water to my army on the other side. Boy was I happily surprised when I realized I could hit her conquistadors. I shot her with cannons and crossbows and easily sank about 7 conquistadors.

I'm pretty sure you can still fire ranged attacks at embarked units incapable of defense. I know for a fact that you can fire at unembarked civilian units, such great people, workers, and settlers. It takes about 3 attacks to kill one, but it is possible. And I would assume it's possible to attack undefended embarked units from range, too.

I have never been able to hit embarked units with ranged units other than cities. The city attack seems to hit them but crossbows or cannons refuse to attack.

Did you click the ranged attack icon? They don't just auto-attack with rightclick.

Yes you can hit embarked units with ranged units. Do it all the time

You do have to use the range icon though, can't just right click

Yeh I've just been using the right-click.. interesting, I'll have to try in my next game, certainly has pissed me off not being able to attack embarked units, it was like WTH, theyre on little boats and I have arrows.
