Had to register and share this since I found something really crazy. So I was playing a game as the Siamese which gets a unique building (Wat) that replaces the University. At first I thought this was a pretty pathetic bonus, since their only difference is +3 culture.

But then it happened.... I realized that you can have both a Wat AND a University in the same city.

With the Reformation belief called "Jesuit Education", you're allowed to buy science buildings with Faith. Even if you have a Wat already built, you can still purchase a University! For someone who plays exclusively science victories, I can tell you that the potential of having two extra scientist slots is insane.

Linked a screenshot with one of my cities. Yes, the percentage bonuses do stack:

175% science modifier:

50% from Wat (with Rationalism policy)
50% from University (with Rationalism policy)
50% from Research Lab
25% from an Order policy

Haven't finished the game yet, but I can already tell my capital alone will end up having 500+ science near the end of the game. Also, this is by far the most scientists I have ever saved up, and I haven't even reached the Apollo Program yet.

I can confirm same thing happening to me. Altrough I noticed it too late to abuse it (after that religion was spread to my city). It would have been even better, as I had an observatory there as well, lol,

Also, I wouldn't call the Wat's bonus "pathetic".

There's a Tradition tactic to get yourself 4 free Wats from Legalism. (Of course if you do this, you're free aquaducts will be rather late.)

And even without either faith or legalism abuse, the extra culture will get you thru the Rationalism tree slightly faster.

^ Agreed. I don't quite remember though, does it still require you to build Amphitheaters in all 4 cities before you can get Wat?

That's a pretty mad hax, lol. I thought about it while playing as Siam, but since I never go for Piety, it was mostly theoretical.

How do you get policies to make that work? Start tradition and then get piety or something?

Pretty much. To be fair all the other religious civs prioritize Jesuit Education as well so... good luck getting this exploit. But yeah, it's definitely something to be patched up. Having a Wat and University is lolzy.

I meant getting Wats with Legalism, not necessarily Jesuit Education. Yeah, seems to be really hard to get that on harder difficulties or low faith generation starts.

This. Now that all the culture buildings past the Monument have had their base culture production reduced, the Wat's 3 culture (on a building that you're going to produce ASAP anyway, no less) is a pretty big deal.

Naw, you just pray to spawn close enough to Ethiopia and let him spread ^^ although if you catch a religion that means no univ in your capital :(.

This would be a case of the AI actually selecting the right reformation belief. :goodjob:
It's the best of the reformation beliefs by a wide margin.
