Here is a neat little trick if you have some resources to spare. The resource for resource trade is pretty standard between you and the AI. However, GPT deals are much more lucrative now, with the upkeep costs of cities.

When you open up negotiations with the AI, you'll see how much gold they have to spare, and how much GPT they're willing to part with. I find that if they are on good terms with me, I can sell them a luxury resource for GPT.

The standard price seems to be around 10 gpt. I built the Broadway wonder and sold hit musicals to 3 civs for 10 gpt each. That's an extra 30 gpt. That's like founding a religion, building it's shrine and spreading it to 30 cities, only much easier. The other great thing about this is that trade deals last forever unless somebody actively wants to stop the deal. That means no 're-negotiations' after 20 turns like you had to in Civ 3.

Last but not least, the more trade deals you have with an AI, and the longer they run without interruption, the better your relationship grows with them.

Granted, not all AIs have gold to spare. If you see a 0 in the GPT screen, that means they are on a tight budget.

Another tiny hint that can be helpful. Initially you trade your extra dye to France for 5g/turn, the maximum that they are allowed to trade, putting them now at 0 available. 10 turns or so later France contacts you, asking to trade something. After going into the diplomacy screen you see that France now has 2g/turn available to work with. Sure you could deal another extra resource to them to grab that 2g per, but the better option is to cancel the previous trade you have with them. After canceling the initial dye trade, France will now have 7g/turn to work with, which they will happily give you for the very same dye.

Whew, long winded for a simple idea, but it beats watching the Vikings play like a semi-pro team.
