speeding up turns

i play huge maps all the time, ive never had a turn last more than 5 min. right now im playing with all the civs on a huge map and all AI civs are known. 80% of the map is shown and its only taking max 5 min btwn turns. and thats on a celeron 500 with 300(ish)mb ram. and i have media player running.

cidknee ahuge is 160x160. Gen one up with 250x250 and at least 24 civs on 80% water and let me know how you like it by early industrial. Make it an emperor game so the ai can get a decent start.

The island map will get real ugly as each time a town is founded all routes much be checked. Lose a harbor, same thing. Civs wil have lots of troops on island maps as they have nothing else to make.

As long as you have a minimum threshold of RAM, the game is definitely CPU limited.

I would say the minimum RAM is 256MB for Win98/ME and 512MB for Win2000/XP.

I have a 3.4G with 1G of RAM, that's well beyond what the game requires. Until about mid third age I was doing fine, then it just started getting slower...and slower...and slower. My turns take 30 seconds to a minute. Then I have to wait five minutes for AI to take his turns. That was last week on my one and only Huge map max AI...forget that crap. If I wanted to play a game that went dirt ass slow Id invite my friends over to play Axis and Allies...to original board game that is, not the computer versions :)

You should think yourself lucky. Five minutes for a huge map in the later stages of the game is quick. I have heard of people with systems just above the minimum specs who have to wait for over an hour between turns.

The moral of the story is: If you don't like to wait long between turns, don't play map sizes above standard.

One thing that bothers me are all the stupid foreign advisor annoncements. If you're minimizing you have to keep going back because the game idles waiting for you to acknowledge the message.

Is there any way to turn that off?
