I like this map! In fact the way I play isn't much different from "normal" maps. Just a few more triremes, that's all.

One advantage with the capital on a size 2 island is that caravan deliveries always get the different continents bonus. I have delivered some camels with good payoffs early in this game.

I found a few more small islands with rough terrain before finding the american continent. In fact, I landed a settler on a forrest square on the top corner of that continent and started chopping down the trees preparing for a new city with access to whales. Only later did I discover that Washington was only 2 squares away but I went ahead anyway and built the city there. The Americans surprisingly suggested an alliance later on and I gladly accepted. I gave them the republic also so that trade bonuses would be higher.

I have played until 1AD and I think I am doing just fine. I have 13 cities with the capital being size 12, 28 techs and three wonders, working on Shakespeare's theatre which will be finished within 2 turns. After that I will build sewers in Athens and grow to size 20+.

I have started to bother the other civs as well. I managed to subvert an Aztec city for only 48g!!! Just as cheap as a barbarian city. I wonder why?

Here's the first installment of my log. It's the first one I've done. I decided to play an OCC. Hope you find it interesting and feel free to tell me where I'm going wrong!!!

I'm just going to relax and enjoy this one. The last two GOTM's I was just building cities like mad, trying to perfectly micromanage and max everything out, if I had finished I may have gotten a great score but I didn't really enjoy myself so much thats probably why I didn't finish. This game I'm just going to take it easy and enjoy!

4000BC : Poped the hut, 50 gold

..... developed mapmaking (of course) and built some cities on the islands nearby

2250BC : Monarchy

2200BC : Zulus destroyed by barbarians

2100BC : Meet Americans, they declare war
... lost my horseman to a barbarian chariot :(

1450BC : First settlers destroied by barbarians!

1000BC : Built Hanging Gardens! :goodjob:

875BC : Six barbs from a hut! Damb barbs!

So far four causalities to barbarians, a settler, a phalanx and two horsemen

775BC : Silk caravan from Cornith arrives in Washington, 96 gold (only 1 trade though)

750BC : French meet me, offer treaty, I decline and demand tribute, they declare war :D What really annoys me though is they blocked my horseman from getting at the barbarian leader two squares away!

675BC : Narcity builds Colosus

400BC : Greeks discover Philosophy, I chose Monothesism as my free wonder

375BC : Romans build Pryramids, I was hoping the Americans would build it and I could capture it but alas, thats what I get for being greedy, should've built it myself instead of Collosus, oh well.

325BC : Cornith build Macro Polo's Embassy

300BC : Trading party, extracted maps with gifts, got everyone angry by demanding tribute.

225BC : Govt. changed to Republic (shoot, no one's giving me tribute anyway!)

Taking a break for now, I'll keep you updated!

1000AD Statistics
----------------------
30 cities - 7,390,000 people

Units: 11 Engineers, 12 Riflemen, 13 Cavalry, 13 Transport, 12 Diplomat, 18 Freight

----------------------

I still haven't found the right balance between engineers + city development and trade + science. I only have 11 Engineers in 1000AD while having no less than 60 techs. I would have preferred 50 Engineers and 50 techs, at least for GOTM score purposes. Next game I will try to focus more on developing my cities after 1AD! This game I will launch into space again. I will be able to do so before 1500AD.

Decision1: Shoot for Monarchy rather than early Republic, because of earlier tech and three free supported units. Do Rep after infrastructure in place, esp Marketplace and Harbor.

Decision2: Risk of Advanced Tribe or Barb if hut popped? Samson at Apolyton says no as long as I have a NONE settler. So pop the hut before founding.

Analysis: The two Whales will give a good start for first two citizens, leading to second citizen in 10 turns and third on turn 25. Probably wont get to Monarchy with help from huts by then. Biggest problem will be Shields: after the first two citizens reach 5, cit 3 and 4 only add 1 shield apiece. Could mine Plains to Forest for extra shield, but then I lose the Trade and OCC is a tech game. Lots of things I need early on: ships/Maps, Temple, Mysticism, govmt change, Colossus, Harbor, Library, Marketplace, trade routes, alliances, tribute, AI maps, NONE units (especially another ship!), and LOTS of gold to make up for few shields.

My beginning commodity supplies are Beads, Salt, and Oil. Anyone else doing OCC have better? Over on Apolyton.Net they were looking at how to force changes to commodity supplies, so I'll take a look at that too.

Second question: I'm not getting ANY alliances or tribute. Any ideas on how to make that happen? My power rating is "Pathetic", which does not seem to be helping, but I'm doing OCC. I've made contact with three other civs using military units, but even when I put a unit ashore on their continent and try to ask for something they refuse. Playing MultiCity I've noticed that they refuse tribute until I build a city on their continent, but that's not an option here. Ideas?

You must gift techs. If using MGE,then wait until you have 2-4 to give.Get them to worshipful first, then ask for alliance, then ask for gifts.

I,also,am playing it OCC.Going well.Trying Shake's before Cope's.Just didn't seem good to stay at size 12 for so long.
One bad thing is the Zulus were killed off early by the French. This will hurt research.Perhaps the French felt guilty as they have given ALOT of gold gifts.

Played till 1AD and I have 29 techs and 2 wonders.City is celebrating to size 21 and trying to rush caravans.I have the tech for the 2 science wonders.Gold is gonna be the problem.I will have to send off 2 commodity caravans in the middle of wonder caravan rushing to finance the operation.Gotta wait for my boat to return though.

I've gotten Americans, French, and Aztecs to Worshipful many times. No dice on alliances. Once they had contact with each other (I was first to contact each, at least according to their Intel screen) they each demand that I declare war on another. Should I to get the alliance?

No dice on "tribute" requests either - despite being "Pathetic" for most of BC. Mucho frustrado. And the caravans look like they are not repeaters.

OK, 1860ish and I still haven't industrialised. On the surface that sounds bad, but I have just taken out my biggest technological threat (well down to one city)... the Aztecs, the Zulus are down to two cities, the roman's are fighting the barabarians, (I think one of their cities has been held for a thousand years or more). and the soiux are behind a "mountain range"... I have 150 turns or so and the entire world at my disposal :)... send out the engineers :).

A "Brief" (undated log)

The starting point was not bad at all. The worst part was waiting for my boat to be built and after that, it was plain sailing (sorry about the pun).
I had been reading the hut probability table (posted somewhere) and found it was nearly a 50/50 chance to get an advanced tribe on a different continent if there isn't another city there; so I shoved my horsy into my boat along with my settler. After I settled the small island to the south I hut popped every coastal hut I could reach, (out of the first three huts two were advanced tribes and the other an archer :)).

My newly acquired "continent" with two cities on was occupied though… but after "tense" negotiations I liberated the Americans of all their techs and their cites :). After I explored "America" I took a risk and headed west over the open sea, luckily I found the main continent before I could sink (I hated doing that but you have to take a risk to get anywhere in this game). Zulus this time, who fell for my archer on a hill outside your city routine, (which of course they attacked), giving me two of their cities in return.

The other side of the Zulu continent was found and a hut popping expedition was launched :) (I'd didn't know it was part of the same continent till later), but luck held out and two cities were found; defences though had to be swiftly bought and marketplaces sold as barbarians were afoot (a few had horses as well). And after a near loss I had a foothold.

The next thousand years or so was a constant plague of rebellion and fending off attacks. Barbarian mainly… I haven’t hut popped a horde yet, but the roaming ones sure make up for it.

Now came the renaissance, almost at one I had Mikes chapel, Leonardo’s workshop and Adam’s trading centre… That sure helped my economy and rebellion, (I think I was going to collapse inwards), a bit late 1750s or so... but I had a chance... now I started getting aggressive again.

I send an expeditionary force of diplomats and 80% tax to the Aztecs and bought nearly all of their empire out in ten turns or so, (only their capital remains) and the Zulus where taken out the old fashioned way. And just for the hell of it I expanded my northern border against the Sioux with a few well-placed bribes. (Amazing what you can do with 700gold/turn and cities that are 1,200 / 2,400 to buy out)

I have just gone scientific again (1/2turns), and with the advent of railroad, and explosives my terraforming will double. A late finish, but a fully rewarding one. Just a shame I only had time to get about five trade routes the entire time, I’ll have to sort that out.

GOTM 23 -- Mt first OCC Attempt

-4000 -- took the Risk -- Hut = Archer
-4000 -- found Athens (18,4,3), start Alpha
(Settler roads then irrigates the plains)
-3800 -- Discover alpha (no “1” techs; opt for Map)
-3650 -- Plains = irrigated
-3450 -- Just noticed that Athens is size two (probably been that way for a few turns judging by the food box) -- Settler joins to make size three. (Plays around and realizes the We Love the Despot Day has such a small value that we don’t opt for it. :( )
-3400 -- Discover Map, choose CL (no “2” techs…but CL is a “2” -- must be the “joker” tech -- it is the first listed) Buy up to 20 shields for a boat. Working the two whales & the fish. 33 beakers required for next advance.
-3250 -- Boat complete, carries a horse (south -- second move around island shows land)
-3200 -- Athens blows up (DOH!) Move the sleepy Archer inside to take care of business.
-3050 -- Move the boat around, drop off the horse; switch the third citizen from the fish to the ox for a couple of turns.
-2950 -- Discover CL (no “0” techs; opt for Monarchy) -- 48 beakers required for next advance
-2900 -- See the Americans; negotiations don’t go anywhere near well. WAR!
They end up killing a horse, but we soon have two horses (one a Vet ) surrounding Washington. Twice warriors pop out attacking a fortified horse (and failing) leaving an empty city -- tempting, but it is size two. Oh well, maybe some other time. Eventually I tire of this and my vet horse leaves the area for more search (the other horse dies finally)
-2400 -- Athens completes temple (Can you tell that my heart wasn’t in war anyway?)
-2350 -- Discover Monarchy -- on to Write (Cur is the joker tech -- but Trade would not be available right afterwards, so we’ll grab this important one now.)
-2300 -- Forgot to revolt :o (forget again 4 turns later doh #2:o :o ); move boat & horse
-2000 -- Athens is size 4 with 2 pha & a None Archer at home; a boat & horse at sea. Start Col
-1900 -- Revolt (finally)
-1850 -- Monarchy
-1750 -- Discover Write -- on to Currency
-1700 -- (Americans start Pyr)
-1450 -- Hut = Warrior Code (Rats -- more money would have been nice; a none searcher would also have been nice)
-1350 -- Hut = 50g. This was a real risk -- a second tech here would have delayed Trade significantly.
-1150 -- Discover Currency -- opt for Trade (other choices were Feud, IW,Lit, Poly, & Wheel)
-1050 -- Col is half built
-1000 -- Just glanced up -- Athens is size 5, halfway to size 6. move ox citizen to wizard to beef up the science. (French start GL, Az starts Pyr.) While we’re looking around the top five cities are: Athens, Washington, Teno, Zim & Little B. We are a moderate power.
-775 -- Discover Trade -- opt for Lit (this is a no “2” round so next time will be a no “0” round. Lit is a “0” tech (Myst is a “1” tech) if we did Myst first, then Lit would not be available & Phil have to wait for another tech round.) 126 beakers to next advance, with wizard, we get 10 beakers per round => 13 rounds to next advance. We supply Beads, Silver and Oil (Oil?) Checking around, Rome (2), Paris(2) and Boston(1) want beads; nobody wants Silver or Oil yet. most popular produces are Dye (8 demanders) and Hides (7 demanders)

Drop off our horse at the south pole. Since this a supported unit, the plan is to search, find a None unit & disband, leaving the None unit to carry on.
-750 (Rome starts Col)
-725 -- Americans build the Pyramids in Washington (I remember when that city was begging to fall)
-650 -- (?! now only 12 rounds to next advance -- I’ll have to check my power ratings more frequently -- but hey we’re so swift we forgot to revolt a couple of times…)
-550 -- Athens builds Colossus (maybe the light will dawn where it counts  ). Romans switch to Lighthouse (which I’d like, but I’d rather have Marco’s -- my little boat is roaming rather well.) Switch the wizard to a sea space -- each way is the same 13 (but the sea gives a food, & the wiz doesn't) beakers per turn -- the ox gives a lot of food but only one more shield.
-525 (America starts GL)
-500 -- Discover Lit -- on to Myst.
-450 -- Teo builds HG. We make a dip. (We’re 6th largest, America is #2)
-425 (French abandon GL; they will restart and re-abandon this two more times  .)
-375 -- build a Beads Camel
-350 -- Athens is size 6 -- put the extra citizen into the water (now 15 beakers per turn.)
-275 -- Amerks attack my laden boat -- but it survives!
-250 -- Discover Myst -- on to Phil (hope, hope, hope) 154 beakers to next advance, We’re researching at a rate of 15 beakers/turn.
-225 -- We love the king! (now at 17 beakers/t)
-200 -- Beads (d) to Boston = 202g. Embassy with America -- they have three techs & we’d like all of them sooner rather than later (Mas, Pot & Rep).
-175 -- Discover Philosophy =>Discover Medicine, on to Republic; 208 beakers to next advance, 22b/t rate.
-150 (Veii builds the Lighthouse) limping boat (hey but he’s a vet) sleeps to heal
-25 (America is now a Republic)
1 AD we pay 50G for a ceasefire with America, swap Trade, Phil & WC for Rep, Pott & Mas. Switch our research to Const. America starts Marco’s. Cordial, but the conversation ends. :king:

Update on my alliance and trade situation: After about a thousand years of begging I finally got an alliance with the French, who are Supreme. I've gotten a few handouts but not much out of it; its just nice to have. Once I grew Athens to size 23 I got a new commodity: Gold. I'm delivering the third Gold caravan as far away as I can now. The money situation improved once the city maxed out and the Improvements were all built: Harbor, Library, University, Marketplace, Bank, StockExchange. I've got Colossus,Shakespeares,KingRichards,Copernicus, and a lock on Newtons. I'm doing around 4 turns per tech with only 50% Science rate. Once I get Newtons and Democracy I'm going to crank it up for all its worth, turn that MuskOx into Desert or Plains for a few more trade, and tech-bomb every other civ.

My current investigation is into how far I can go with the techs while delaying Industrialization so as to keep KingRich around. I'm at 26 shields/turn now, but I'll drop to 7 when I lose it. Factory, PowerPlant, and Manufacturing dont help much when you have so few to start with! If I transform all the terrain around (Buffalo and two hills?) I can get around 12 Shields from the three land tiles plus 4 from the ocean tiles until I get an Offshore Platform. The problem is I lose some trade. What I'm wondering now is if it is worth it to make all that effort to transform land, or should I just maximize the trade for science and gold and buy everything?

Game log to follow.
