Spoiler 2 : Middle Ages to Metallurgy (350BC to 500AD)
Settle and build (350BC to 130AD)
This is my minimap for 350BC :

I had a fair period of building in order to try and increase my tech pace and to try and settle all of that unclaimed ex-Goguryeo territory to the SE. During this period I neglected my military as I wasn't intending another war until Cavalry. I researched at max towards Cavalry, but progress was slow so I held off the building of Horsemen for awhile and concentrated on infrastructure.
In 130AD Takeda, Oda, Chosogabe and Shimazu made contact with us, then the Han started war. I should have seen this coming (especially in light of the following screenshot), but was still surprised :

I traded contacts and world maps around, and was pleasantly surprised to find I was doing so well :

Han War (130AD to 370AD)
My military was so week at this point that the Han War could have been really damaging. The first thing I did was get alliances against them from the Baekje and Goguryeo. I managed to weather the storm, losing only a couple of cities that were easily gained back, mainly due to AIIP (AI Incompetency Phenomenon

Give me tech (370AD to 500AD)
During this period I continued researching towards Military Tradition, reaching Metallurgy in 500AD. Throughout this period Oda was beating me to the techs by a turn or 2, but only traded them to 2 or 3 others. I was still able to sell my techs to the remaining AIs to move along the top half of the tech tree while only researching the bottom half. 450AD I completed Leondardo's Workshop, so I'm all ready for upgrading my Horsemen to Cavalry. Unfortunately the Han war has left me with just 3 Horsemen to upgrade

Heres my minimap at 500AD :
