Civ3 PTW 1.21f / GOTM20 Open
My little story for this GOTM20... Even though I've been displaying some big events in my sig for many days as I was playing my game... Did not think this was spoiling at all...
So, I built Madrid on the NE hill in 3950bc. Nice to see 1 wheat and 2 cattles. I set up Madrid as a 4-turn settler factory quickly, so as to fill up that empty land. But I was not quick enough to block the French and the Celts : they built like 2 towns in "my" territory, I should have blocked them on choke points, maybe.
When the land-grab phase was over, the French found it smart to declare war on me : they took an undefended town with a warrior passing-by. Just before this, my military was very weak. I had entered the Middle Ages just 1 turn after the QSC phase (so, in 975bc if I'm not wrong). Now I would see these French troops capturing like 4 more towns of mine, getting to Madrid's doors. I was really angry, because I was feeling very fine and confident in 1000bc (I had always managed to keep up with the AI in science). At that point, I was desperately hoping to stop the French and throw them back out of the sacred soil of Spain, but I was fighting with less and weaker units (horsemen and spears, no iron hooked, then no iron at all !). I was thinking of giving up, continuing to fight desperately until death... Then I had a vision and I thought "This is GOTM ! I can't give up !"
So I sued for peace. Then I started to build up a great military (horsemen and spearmen). I knew I was falling behind in techs (Middle Age). Someday I launched my attack on the French and captured this city with iron. I started to upgrade my units to knights and this was the beginning of the Reconquista. A lot of angry knights captured French cities quite quickly. They went down the west and east coasts, to meet in Paris, which I captured just after getting my 1st leader. I used him to rush a 700-shield palace in Paris, making it my new capital. I had built my Forbidden Palace in a city a few tiles north-east of Madrid. The French were left with one city in the north of the continent.
A bit later, I attacked the Zulu. This was a wrong move. I was feeling I needed a war to slow down the tech pace (no libraries built then) and take some from war. But I had just a few units (cavalries) and after capturing one city, they took it back along with another one, just next to Paris. I had managed to take many medieval techs after the Reconquista, but now I was in great debt with a few civs (French, Indians, Zulu, IIRC...) and India was taking the tech lead, by far, too far and alone (early Industrial Age). I sued for peace with the Zulu (though getting some gold for it).
The Industrial Age was peaceful at the beginning. I started to build a lot of improvements in my cities. I was thinking of how to trigger my Golden Age, with conquistadores, because I did not build any wonder. I had 2 of these UUs, when I realized I did not need them... I realized it when I rushed the Universal Suffrage : Golden Age !!!
Yes, that unlocks traits of captured wonders, and at least I had taken the Colossus. This was perfect because this is when I was building universities, factories and stuff... In 20 turns, Spain had changed from an "old-regime" kingdom to an industrial country, with railroads starting to run through the empire. Now it was time to prepare for the next war...
India had to be beaten because they were ahead of everyone in techs. They had been in MPP with Zululand, but not anymore. With my cash and 2nd tech lead, I bought everyone's alliance against India. No detail, we (me + Zulu + Celts) crushed them quite quickly. From now on the tech pace was nearly stopped for a very long time, because of wars and communism... But not for me, President of the Spanish Democracy, funding science at high speed.
The 3 Indian cities I took were seperated from my empire (south of Madras) by Zulu territory. Now for the big thing. Worldwide coalition again, against the Zulu. But this time I was the real winner : I wiped them out of the Earth almost alone, taking care to bombard them with a huge artillery (at least for me : over 100, nearly 200 in the end of the game) and building many more mechanized infantries than as usual. The main part of tanks (then modern armors) filled the armies Paris was building (one every 4 turns in the end). Only the Iroquois and Japanese entered the Modern Age, well after me, though.
I decided to go for a Spaceship Victory, as usual. But this time I wanted a greater score, so that's why I was warmongering now. Next were Celts, because they were the only power left on my continent. The situation was : good Celt empire, France dead, Aztec dead, Indian and Zulu dead, English barely surviving 2 ages behind, Ottomans surviving with a few cities, Americans on the way to decadence, Japanese and Iroquois the 2 overseas powers. I took English cities, ciao. Then I brought everyone against the Celts. This time war weariness stroke me badly, but not enough to really slow down my science pace. During the 1st modern war (against Indians), I spent more than 20 turns without any war weariness (Universal Suffrage, Democracy, police stations, 8 luxuries). Modern armor armies and artillery stacks quickly made the decision. But this was when I built the Spaceship : I made peace with the Celts just before victory, leaving them with just one city.
About the other continent : I did not care at all. Just at the end, I participated to the wiping out of the Americans, razing some cities in Hispanola, and settling in 3 spots on this island, just to get some accuracy in my game.
I ended with a Spacehip Victory in 1625ad, with a Firaxis score of 6261. Jason score = ??? (better than last month, I hope)
