*Spoiler4* - Gotm20-Spain - End Game Submitted

Civ3 PTW 1.21f / GOTM20 Open

My little story for this GOTM20... Even though I've been displaying some big events in my sig for many days as I was playing my game... Did not think this was spoiling at all... ;)

So, I built Madrid on the NE hill in 3950bc. Nice to see 1 wheat and 2 cattles. I set up Madrid as a 4-turn settler factory quickly, so as to fill up that empty land. But I was not quick enough to block the French and the Celts : they built like 2 towns in "my" territory, I should have blocked them on choke points, maybe.

When the land-grab phase was over, the French found it smart to declare war on me : they took an undefended town with a warrior passing-by. Just before this, my military was very weak. I had entered the Middle Ages just 1 turn after the QSC phase (so, in 975bc if I'm not wrong). Now I would see these French troops capturing like 4 more towns of mine, getting to Madrid's doors. I was really angry, because I was feeling very fine and confident in 1000bc (I had always managed to keep up with the AI in science). At that point, I was desperately hoping to stop the French and throw them back out of the sacred soil of Spain, but I was fighting with less and weaker units (horsemen and spears, no iron hooked, then no iron at all !). I was thinking of giving up, continuing to fight desperately until death... Then I had a vision and I thought "This is GOTM ! I can't give up !"

So I sued for peace. Then I started to build up a great military (horsemen and spearmen). I knew I was falling behind in techs (Middle Age). Someday I launched my attack on the French and captured this city with iron. I started to upgrade my units to knights and this was the beginning of the Reconquista. A lot of angry knights captured French cities quite quickly. They went down the west and east coasts, to meet in Paris, which I captured just after getting my 1st leader. I used him to rush a 700-shield palace in Paris, making it my new capital. I had built my Forbidden Palace in a city a few tiles north-east of Madrid. The French were left with one city in the north of the continent.

A bit later, I attacked the Zulu. This was a wrong move. I was feeling I needed a war to slow down the tech pace (no libraries built then) and take some from war. But I had just a few units (cavalries) and after capturing one city, they took it back along with another one, just next to Paris. I had managed to take many medieval techs after the Reconquista, but now I was in great debt with a few civs (French, Indians, Zulu, IIRC...) and India was taking the tech lead, by far, too far and alone (early Industrial Age). I sued for peace with the Zulu (though getting some gold for it).

The Industrial Age was peaceful at the beginning. I started to build a lot of improvements in my cities. I was thinking of how to trigger my Golden Age, with conquistadores, because I did not build any wonder. I had 2 of these UUs, when I realized I did not need them... I realized it when I rushed the Universal Suffrage : Golden Age !!! :) Yes, that unlocks traits of captured wonders, and at least I had taken the Colossus. This was perfect because this is when I was building universities, factories and stuff... In 20 turns, Spain had changed from an "old-regime" kingdom to an industrial country, with railroads starting to run through the empire. Now it was time to prepare for the next war...

India had to be beaten because they were ahead of everyone in techs. They had been in MPP with Zululand, but not anymore. With my cash and 2nd tech lead, I bought everyone's alliance against India. No detail, we (me + Zulu + Celts) crushed them quite quickly. From now on the tech pace was nearly stopped for a very long time, because of wars and communism... But not for me, President of the Spanish Democracy, funding science at high speed.

The 3 Indian cities I took were seperated from my empire (south of Madras) by Zulu territory. Now for the big thing. Worldwide coalition again, against the Zulu. But this time I was the real winner : I wiped them out of the Earth almost alone, taking care to bombard them with a huge artillery (at least for me : over 100, nearly 200 in the end of the game) and building many more mechanized infantries than as usual. The main part of tanks (then modern armors) filled the armies Paris was building (one every 4 turns in the end). Only the Iroquois and Japanese entered the Modern Age, well after me, though.

I decided to go for a Spaceship Victory, as usual. But this time I wanted a greater score, so that's why I was warmongering now. Next were Celts, because they were the only power left on my continent. The situation was : good Celt empire, France dead, Aztec dead, Indian and Zulu dead, English barely surviving 2 ages behind, Ottomans surviving with a few cities, Americans on the way to decadence, Japanese and Iroquois the 2 overseas powers. I took English cities, ciao. Then I brought everyone against the Celts. This time war weariness stroke me badly, but not enough to really slow down my science pace. During the 1st modern war (against Indians), I spent more than 20 turns without any war weariness (Universal Suffrage, Democracy, police stations, 8 luxuries). Modern armor armies and artillery stacks quickly made the decision. But this was when I built the Spaceship : I made peace with the Celts just before victory, leaving them with just one city.

About the other continent : I did not care at all. Just at the end, I participated to the wiping out of the Americans, razing some cities in Hispanola, and settling in 3 spots on this island, just to get some accuracy in my game. :D

I ended with a Spacehip Victory in 1625ad, with a Firaxis score of 6261. Jason score = ??? (better than last month, I hope)

Nice game Kryszcztov. Congratulations on buckling down and grinding out a victory! To be honest, wish I had more of that spirit - I hate wars when the outcome is uncertain, maybe I had better start beating up the AI civs earlier...

I won a Deity game!!!! :D

4141 points, in 1745AD .. Space Race ..

But here's the kicker:
Never had a Golden Age
Never fought A SINGLE BATTLE ... the cities I built at the beginning were the ones I finished with in the end :)

Wow...that was intense!

Wow, ChrTh, well done!!

You're a Deity Virgin no more :D. You launched before I did and I'm jealous about the wars. The common opinion seems to be you have to fight wars on Deity to win. I'm glad you proved them wrong. :goodjob:

ptw v1.41 open

<edit> Thanks cracker!

Glad to say I have a Deity win to post! Prayers for your nephew, Ronald. Hope things go well.

Well, this game was somewhat experimental in that I took a hard-line anti-reputationist approach. That is, every chance I had, from the first opportunity, I ripped off the AI. For the most part this took the form of promising huge amounts of gpt for a tech and then declaring war to nullify my end of the deal as soon as the UPS guy showed up at my door with the goods. Of course, after you do that once, you can only trade gpt for tech as part of the terms of a peace agreement, and the more you do it the more turns seem to elapse before any foe will consider peace. The result was constant war, from my first invasion of France with my medieval warrior rush until about 20 turns from the end, when I was Finally able to switch out of Monarchy.
But what happened? The RNG had a huge impact in my game. The Ottomans got wiped out early in the Ancient Age by the monstrous Zulus, which set the stage for a Zulu juggernaught. I thought I was being clever in taking advantage of the MI rush in PTW, attack at 4 without having to research Chivalry and all, but, well, the Zulu fool with the best laid plans. As my armies march toward Paris, Joan enlists Shaka's help. Right at the gates, at least 18 zulu knights with an ROP storm out of the darkness and pretty much lay to waste my attack force. It set back my conquest of France by an entire age... It was enough to make you say.... arrrr.... I allied the Indians and Celts against Zulu, but Shaka had other ideas. He wiped out India completely, and whacked Keltoi so hard they never again amounted to anything. So in effect my Gang Up On The Zulu strategy just made them bigger and badder, while instead of conquering France I was holding off my share of African fanatics. Finally made peace with Zulu for many many gpt, bought an alliance against the French for many more gpt. Declare war on Zulu, get my gpt back, make peace with France for all their tech, declare war on them. Zulu's forces got stranded in hostile French territoy... it was probably The turning point for me.
Long story short. War with Zulu dragged on for 100's of years. Ripped 'em off over and over until they were too weak to get the cool techs. Japan emerged as the super tech leader, so I bought an alliance with them vs. Zulu, promptly made peace with Zulu. Japan must've sent at least 70 units over to take care of a battered Shaka while I shipped all my artillery and infantry, about 30 apiece, over to Japan. They still sold me an ROP for lots of gpt, so parking my 'worm' next to their capitol was no big deal. Start shelling, Tokugawa's army is stranded in Zululand getting Slaughtered by us both while I just move that stack around for about 25 turns, hollowing out the Japanese empire to drag their tech pace to a crawl.
Yup. Meanwhile, build lots of tanks, take over the continent, ship 'em over to Japan, eliminate them. I guess I did honor deals with America and Iroquois, most importantly one for 125gpt for a MPP with America that turned them against Japan.
So I didn't rip everyone off. The insight I gained is that your civ rep can be sold for a sort of golden age effect. If I had waited to get dirty until just the right moment, I might have ripped everyone off at once and reaped a greater benefit. Still, if the price is right these silly AI's will still form alliances, I still got an ROP out of Japan, ect. Like I told Shaka (he didn't listen), Fool Me Once, Shame on You. Fool Me Twice, Shame on Me. The AI never really got that.
Gave up on conquest...just to many advanced defenders. Raced America for tech, we actually traded each other to both achieve what was needed for a space race victory. I kinda squeaked by I think. 1800, 8987 Firaxis points, not sure about the Jason points.
Here's what the foreign advisor would have reported had she been really paying attention. Plus minimaps from 1580 and 1780. Sorry to take up so much space folks! Hope all this helps someone...

Playing civ3 v1.29 Open class.

My ancient age post

My middle ages post

My industrial age post

I've been playing all weekend, and I'm totally exhausted after reading through the whole spolier 3 & 4 threads. So this is just a quick timeline of my game.

Enter modern ages in 1340 ad, with most of my own continent secured.

1340 ad Capture Delhi, with Sun Tzu's and Js Bachs! :D
1355 ad 4th leader.
1360 ad Indians destroyed. I now control my own continent. Fission discovered.
1370 ad Pentagon, Manhattan project completed.
1375 ad Intelligence Agency.
1380 ad UN.
1385 ad Neuvo Uno founded on other continent. Temple rushed. I ferry troops in there in anticipation of my attack.
1420 ad Declare war on Americans.
1430 ad Americans destroyed.
1435 ad Declare war on Japan. My army: 3 settlers, 102 workers (plus lots of captured), 10 cavalry, 71 tanks, 16 MI, 42 arty, 2 Ironclads, 5 transports, 1 destroyer, 3 battleships, 2 nuclear subs, 3 fighters, 11 bombers, 3 MI armies, 2 cav armies. The Japs have both Infantry & Tanks. The Japs have 47 inf, 13 tanks, 2 cavalry, 2 ironclads & 13 battleship. Bringing in reinforcements by ship will be difficult. Luckily, I have already built an airport on the new world.
Iroqious sneak attack us! Heavy losses: lose 8 tanks, 8 arty, 1 battleship, 1 full transport.
1445 ad 5th Leader. Will go home to rush Seti.
1450 ad WW makes economy unstable. Sell Fission to Aztecs for 2180 g, 45 gpt, Silks & Amphibious Warfare.
1455 ad 6th leader. Rushes Colloseum in Washington.
1465 ad Sign peace with Japan, since all their cities are now S of Aztecs. I think Iroq territory will be enough for Domination.
1475 ad Ecology. Sell it to Aztecs for 241 gpt & 500 gold.
1480 ad Domination achieved! 9514 Firaxis points. 8819 Jason points. I think that is sligthly more than I would have got had I held the vote in 1380 ad.

***PTW 1.21 Conquest Class***

OK Guys,

Go easy on me ...

This was my first ever Deity game win and my first ever GOTM.

Zulu crushed the Ottomans, French, Indians.
I got the Celts after the Zulu left them 3 cities.

Then whilst the Zulu where starting to build there spaceship and had already built the UN when I was still researching Electronics I built a small army of 40 arties, 40 infantry and 10 cavs and ROP raped them and took the UN city.

They then took all my other cities apart from my Capital and the Well protected UN city.

The turn before the UN vote, the Zulu nuked my capital city.
All other civs declared war on them and the next turn the Vote came up.

Me or Shaka!

I win

woot

UN victory in 1600AD, score of 4927 WTG me!!!

Melifluous

ChrTh, you have to upload a screenshot of that little paradise you ran for 5745 years.

Melifluous, you certainly possess deity-level tenacity. Congratulations!

Thanks guys...

I must however thank Kemal for suggesting I try and take the UN city....

I also learnt that if you have a spy in another civ you can see how their spacerace is going as well as the whole of their army!

Cant believe I won it...

Rock on...

BTW I also triggered my GA in 1345 with them conquistadors...
Anyone else feel that they should be a Knight replacement?

Melifluous

Melifluous,

You may be the top nominee fro the player who won their game in the most interesting way.

I personally cannot wiat to see the replay of those final turns and watch you snatch victory from the jaws of almost certain impalement on a pike before Shaka's kraal.

That is truly an amazing and twisted outcome.

How would you describe the emotional intensity of the final few turns?

Well to put it bluntly...

After the Zulu owned my continent I was completely at a loss for what to do.

I thought ho hum another Deity game gone pear shaped

Then my very good friend Kemal suggested I take the UN and get the win that way.....
I didnt realise that I could do that so my game was given a new lease of life.

My cities were all very productive (coal plants in all the big ones) and I was making 1000gpt, for some reason after taking the Celts out my rep was shot.

I pumped out a load of artillery and got a spy into the Zulus on my first attempt.

Checking the UN city of bombay I saw that there were 5 Mech Inf and an artillery.

From there I gave the Zulu a ROP so that they could get to the English better and not have lots of troops in my lands...

Last check they had 60+ tanks and 280 Mech Inf :o

My workers railroaded up to Bombay and built a fortress outside (which wasnt needed but hey it was a nice thought)

Finally 15 or so turns later my army was ready.

I emptied every city apart from my capital and moved my SOD up to Bombay.

Now would be the test, did I have enough?

Sure enough my artilley took the city below the magic 12 citizen number and Then my infantry and cavs took out those 5 Mech Inf.

next turn the Zulu wiped out the English, it was just the Zulus and me on the continent.

Every turn came and went with no UN vote in sight.

My cities rioted as the luxuries went...

They rioted so much I got kicked back to Anarchy :o

I then chose Communism once they were under control to keep the costs down...

I was convinced I was gonna lose anyway

Sweat poured from my brow as turn by turn the Zulu walked into my undefended cities and tried in vain to recapture Bombay.

Suddenly interturn every civ declared war on the Zulus?

Whats going on I though and cheered as each new civ declared war.

Then I found out why as a Zulu Nuke crashed in Madrid.

I'm dead I thought.

Then as the dust cloud settled I was asked by my advisor if I would like to call a UN vote...

Erm yeah?

The candidates?

Me and Shaka.

My hands shook as I voted for myself and prayed as the results were shown...

Everyone (except Shaka) voted for me!

I had won :crazyeye: :crazyeye: :crazyeye:

I whooped and cheered then had to spend 10 minutes explaining to my four year old son why I was so happy...

Still cant believe I won it, madness

Melifluous

An even more freakish turn of events happens when I continue this game past the win...

The Zulu take Bombay!
My UN city gets taken the VERY NEXT TURN!!!!

This game was wierd and my ever present luck wins the day it would seem...

Melifluous

Melifluous, I have to say: I got your game in a stack of five others for score validation, and I thought I had seen the final-interturn of the month when in one of the other games the player beat Japan to their final spaceship part by 1/2 a turn. Then I saw yours. The war declarations. The Madrid nuke. The UN vote. I even watched the whole replay to see your empire get taken apart.

Holy cr*p, that was amazing.

:goodjob:

Renata

Man, I pull off the impossible (Deity win without fighting)...and I get overshadowed by Meli's brink-of-death victory! :wallbash:

J/K :D ... that was awesome  Meli, you need to add that to the Stories & Tales forum after the month is over (and include the end-of-game Save, natch) :)

This was my first time playing the game of the month, and it was a very enjoyable experience. It is also the first time I have won on Deity level! (Probably due to Spain's nice starting position.)

I played the Conquest level, with 1.29f.

I spent most of the ancient age expanding my territory. I was able to secure the area up to the bottleneck in the northeast, which bordered the Celts. I was hopelessly behind in tech almost from the beginning:cry: . My cities were defended by spearmen up until I got infantry! Luckily, I kept out of wars and was on good terms with France to the south.

Things stayed pretty static for a long while, until the late industrial age, ~1400 or 1500. By then, Zulu and India were wiped out on my continent. I went in with Keltoi in a war versus England; England was wiped out, but mainly through the Kelts efforts. I captured only one city. My military was still very weak at this point.

Around the mid 1500s I had beefed up my military with infantry and artillery. Allied with the Ottomans in a war versus Keltoi, wiping them out. Good news: I captured about five cities of old England and Keltoi. Bad news: Ottoman was way too strong. They had twice as many cities as anyone in the game.

Meanwhile, on the other continent, it was down to Iroquois, Aztec, and Japan. Japan was the most dominant and wiped out the others by the endgame.

I was still trying to catch up in tech and had just gotten ahead of everyone except the Ottomans. Through my spy, it was apparent that they were trying to get a Space Race victory--7/10 complete already! I had just researched Synthetic Fibers, and Ottomans did not have it yet--obviously they had gone for spaceship tech like superconductor.

I decided drastic means were necessary! I had a ROP with Ottomans and so upgraded my tanks to Modern Armor--thirty total. Took them straight to Ottomans capital, Sogut, which turned out to be defended by ~12 mech inf. Captured it and razed it, because it was likely to flip. This whole maneuver made Ottoman very mad, but took out their space ship!

Over the next few hundred years, the Ottomans repeated invaded (and nuked me a few times), but I was able to stop them with artillery to weaken invaders down to 1 hp and modern armor to finish them off. Otto never even tried to rebuild the spaceship; just concentrated on about 10 modern armor per turn which he invaded with and I destroyed, usually without losing a single unit myself. I was also able to capture all of old English territories and most of Kelts.

In 1778, I finished and launched my own spaceship. Final score 5380; which is a record for me. Very fun game!

Sorry cracker I just realized this was the wrong place for my post. I posted it in Spoiler3

Eventually I finished. This month I had very little time to play. Despite I started on June 1st at 9.00 AM I finished on June 29th 10.00 PM.
I achieved a domination victory on 1180 AD. It was a continuous war since 450BC (these are the games I like).
Since my game was pretty standard and it looks like every key aspect of GOTM20 has already been dig I would like to share my experience with culture flipping of conquered cities.
I already had a good experience in dealing (read RAZING) conquered cities but this game was really hard because I have almost zero culture point (no library) compared to other civs.

Spain terminated 7 civs and half terminated Japan. Overall we conquered 86 cities, 24 of them ware either razed or abandoned. Out of the remaining 62, 15 flips (24%).
I following an obvious strategy that can be summarized in two sentences:
1) Try to keep the cities you conquered if you are planning to move your Palace or build the FP in the area. In this case keep just one unit in the city, on 3/4 attacking unit out of the city to conquer it again as it flips.
2) Raze or better abandon after 1 turn the cities in area that will never produce more than 1 shield per turn. I usually do not raze city. I conquer them, sell all the improvement, keep it one turn to facilitate troop moving inside enemy area and then abandon it

This is how I used this strategy in my game. French, Otto and Zulu territory could be an interesting place to move the palace, other civs territory was not useful.

France: 11 cities conquered, 4 flips (36%), 0 razed or abandoned
Ottomans: 9 cities conquered, 7 flips (78%), 0 razed or abandoned
Zulu: 8 cities conquered, 1 flips (13%), 0 razed or abandoned
India: 16 cities conquered, 0 flips , 10 razed or abandoned
Keltoi: 11 cities conquered, 1 flips (9%), 3 razed or abandoned
English: 11 cities conquered, 0 flips , 3 razed or abandoned
Aztecs: 10 cities conquered, 1 flips (10%), 5 razed or abandoned
Japan: 10 cities conquered, 1 flips (10%), 7 razed or abandoned
