Standard map size vs Small

Hello!
I've returned to civ5 after a while about two weeks ago to check out vox populi. I really love it! It makes this game so much better! Every civ seems more balanced, so I can just pick a random and enjoy, unlike in BW.
I suppose this mod is balanced to be played on standard size map, however I prefer small maps, because then the game seems less overwhelming. How would you compare those to options? Is standard size much better to be played?
I do play on Standard speed, if that matter.

Everything is balanced for standard, but it scales more or less properly from tiny to standard. Large and Huge have different setting, there's more empty land, you can place more cities for every civ, so either set up your game with more players (10 for large, 16 for huge), or your game will be slightly unbalanced towards wide play.

I play small but only for performance reasons. I like standard better, but the end turns are just too slow for me.
